"Well, a lot of Jews are like Peter Sarsgaard." Pretty sure he isn't, but he shares a bed with Maggie Gyllenhaal so he's one of the flock honorarily. She meant the character, not the actor. Slow on the uptake over here. That aside: wow. I remember thinking a couple weeks ago that An Educa...

The truth is that it was THIS BOARD which desperately wanted to see it as the ONLY possible winner, despite everything. No movie, in any year, has Oscar "written all over it" since before it's released, except in the minds of its fans, or in those of the publicity department. There are AL...

I think this pretty much kills Invictus's chances for an Oscar Best Picture nomination. Aren't there ten nominations this year? I think Changeling AND Gran Torino could've been nominated with ten spots last year. No one has mentioned the year's biggest outrage - Julia Roberts over Zooey Deshenal. W...

The biggest loser is An Education. This would seem like perfect Foreign Press fodder. Dramatic Picture, Supporting Actor, and Screenplay seemed like solid bets in the wake of that Mulligan juggernaut that we keep hearing about. Films like A Serious Man, Invictus, and The Lovely Bones suffered set-b...

/Mary Poppins/ (Robert Stevenson) - Mary Poppins/10

Kind of beyond criticism at this point. It's pretty shameless but full of so many moments just ingrained in your brain. And yet I have no memory of suffrage in this film. It's Mary Poppins. It is what it is.

/Adaptation./ (Spike Jonze) - 7.5/10 Flaws on more prominent display this time and with far fewer excuses for what I'm not digging. "Donald's" handiwork isn't wrong-headed but poorly fleshed out, and puts far too much into focus the irony of a second writer taking over. It doesn't really ...

And the rest of us just stood by and watched, without offering a slightest note of protest.

Or didn't know it happened in the first place. This wasn't some soap opera bullshit was it?
