Daniel, glad to see J. Edward Bromberg on your list. In a year filled with memorable Supporting Actor performances, he was a runner-up for me who was as worthy as the 5 i ultimately went with, as were Alec Guinness is Kind Hearts And Coronets, Paul Douglas in A Letter To Three Wives and Paul Stewar...

I've not had the time to look at The Godfather movies closely, but on my first glances at the three, I'm kind of disappointed in the transfers myself, especially after the job Warner has been doing on some of their catalog titles. ( The Searchers is one of the best looking Blu-Rays in my collection...

I grew up in a Christian household for 18 years and I never heard of this craziness. If Sarah Palin becomes President you will not only hear about it, your kids will be taught it instead of Science. Let's be accurate here. She doesn't advocate teaching creationism only. She has said that she thinks...

So many times over the years I've watched the cool new show come in with the most nominations and then get shafted in favor of some tired old thing -- Twin Peaks losing to LA Law, The Sopranos falling to The Practice. I'm going to take the contrarian position here. Whether or not LA Law and The Pra...

That must've been during my self-imposed exile from the outside world. I probably missed some good movies on TCM during that period.

Tomorrow night is a great night on TCM: Jacques Tourneur's masterpiece Stars in My Crown is at 9:30. One Way Passage , and 1933 Original Story winner is at 11:15. Then two Anthony Mann films follow: Devil's Doorway at 12:30 and The Tall Target at 2:00. None of these are on DVD, and most don't even ...

I finally watched the first season of this a couple of months back. My only real problem is the fact that it's yet another show trying to pass off Los Angeles as New York, and it's fairly obvious to me when they're outside of some of the key locations (like the club and the office). I hate that I'v...

Mad Men wins Drama Series and Writing (although it makes The Wire the greatest show never to win an Emmy), John Adams wins Miniseries, Eileen Atkins and Zeljko Ivanek win for shows I never saw, and Dianne Wiest wins. All in all, it was a surprisingly good set of winners for the Emmys, but good lord...

This is by miles the worst awards show I've ever watched. Any show that has Josh Groban singing the theme song to The Brady Bunch with a gospel choir has reached a very strange level of camp. The whole thing seems absolutely joyless. The winners haven't been half-bad though. Worst award is for Jere...

I intentionally haven't posted here in about two weeks (or is it three? I forget), but I've almost much finished my 1949 marathon. By the time I finish I'll have seen about fifty movies from 1949. Here's how the list looks... 1- The Small Back Room (Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger) 2- A Lette...

Even though I can think of several things I'd do with 1988, I'm not going to play anymore, OG.

Not a lineup I'm crazy about. The actors were either nominated for the wrong roles (Caine, Hopper), or were the wrong actors from their films nominated (Elliot, whose spot should've gone to Rupert Graves or Simon Callow). And then there's William Dafoe. Either you can take his pothead philosophy ma...

Preserve the El Cid song.

You guys can move on to the next year now without me. I'm going to take a breather for awhile.

In recent years they've tried to be a little edgier by choosing Ellen and Jon Stewart. Aside from the gay thing (which isn't much of an issue since she's had the popular daytime talk show for years), I don't think anyone sees anything remotely edgy about Ellen. Chris Rock was definitely a "try...
