Re: Albert Nobbs reviews

Well, I think the world of Glenn Close, but it's a shame to see her being consistently recognized for her "effort" and a convenience of narrative at the expense of truly exploratory work from actresses like Olsen and Dunst. I've heard many criticize Close for being distant but I could neve...

Re: Top Ten Lists

I found Bridesmaids pretty abhorrent. Fundamentally, it doesn't have any insight into how human beings even interact. It's all so contrived – I didn't believe anything those characters were doing for a second (ie the engagement party microphone back-and-forth scene). Loathsome. Kristen Wiig is a tal...

Re: Chicago Film Critics Nominations

Haven't seen the film yet, but it's nice to see a group recognizing Anna Paquin's performance, which I've heard is quite good indeed.

Re: The Golden Globes

Pretty disappointed, though not surprised, that Olsen didn't manage to make it. It's frustrating that Close did – I saw nothing behind her work. She was too subtle to even register. I've never felt this way about her before. I'm elated, though, that Chastain's Oscar nod is looking like more and more...

Re: The Golden Globes

I have this sinking feeling that Olsen will somehow be snubbed. I hope I'm wrong.

Re:

My feelings toward Liza Minellii were substantially different. I'd always thought of her as the less attractive, less talented daughter, one whose naked emotional neediness made me want to turn away. Then I saw the two films, within the span of a week or two post-nominations. And, while I fully adm...

Re: Best Actress 2010

It's been happening in numerous threads. Take a look at some of the older actress threads – it's pretty staggering. I think it's safe to say that some of the latest results on these older polls should be ignored. Revisiting some of them, Midler, Barrault, Burstyn in The Exorcist, etc, among others h...

Re: Tyrannosaur

I'm in general agreement with bizarre on this one – one of those feeble attempts to invoke "realism" with unrelenting grimness, yet done so in a way that seems more a cheap reconstruction rather than a genuine reflection of human suffering. Colman's role was poorly conceived but I found he...

Is there any word yet on whether Viola Davis will be campaigned for Lead or Supporting? (I think she's obviously lead, by the way, but...)

My choices: 1. Kate Winslet, in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" 2. Norma Aleandro, in "Live-in Maid" 3. Yū Aoi, in "Hana & Alice" 4. Jennifer Garner, in "13 Going on 30" 5. Jeanette Brox, in "Wilderness Survival for Girls" ALT: Samantha ...

Re: 1974 Oscar Shouldabeens

Is anyone else for Blythe Danner in Lovin' Molly? The movie's rather flawed but it should've made her a star. Blthe Danner was already a star on stage and TV, just not in the movies. She had already won a Tony for Butterflies Are Free, played Katharine Hepburn's role in the TV series version of Ada...

Re: Best Actress 1985

I’d really like to see someone make a case for Streep in Plenty. Honestly. I'm seeing some have mentioned the performance around here and I wonder why. I didn't see Kate Nelligan in the stage version but, really, I can imagine the kind of passion and force she brought to that role. Nelligan can gene...

Re: Best Actress 1983

I find it really interesting that so many people have mentioned Bonnie Bedelia and Mariel Hemingway. Both performances are very odd to me because the actresses feel slightly "off" but are very effective. Hemingway is one of those rare actresses who manages to be super interesting even when...
