I've always liked supporting performances that come in for a short time, knock it out of the park, and leave. Duvall got a nomination for Apocalypse Now for doing just that, Wilford Brimley did it in Absence of Malice but didn't get nominated. She won't get a nomination this year, but I loved Patri...

This episode brought back a personal memory. A week before my 18th birthday in 1965 and the weekend before I was to move to Florida, my brother-in-law decided to bring me to the Manhattan Playboy Club. Drinking age was 18 in NYC and I needed fake ID, which I duly memorized. When we got there the gr...

I guess Vanessa Redgrave remains the only Supporting Actress winner that portrayed the titled character. Half credit to Meryl Streep for Kramer vs. Kramer and partial credit for Diane Wiest for Hannah and her Sisters and Margaret Rutherford for The V.I.P.s A side anecdote. Back in 1977 when I handl...

Finding a non-nominee not on OG's exhaustive list, is difficult. How about Eli Wallach?. He's still making movies at age 94, with two noteworthy releases this year, The Ghost Writer and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.

While we are on this sidebar, here are the films with 2 supporting actor nominations that had the most potential for a third, in my estimation. I didn't really look at who would get bumped and in truth, three nominations in any performing category from the same film is an extreme rarity. 1939: Add ...

As I posted for 1973, here's the National Society of Film Critics voting breakdown for 1972. These are the only two years that I have their books. I'm not sure they published more than one or two others. 26 Points - Jeannie Berlin - The Heartbreak Kid 11 Points - Ida Lupino - Junior Bonner 11 Point...

I also saw It's a Mad World at the Warner Theater, but I don't remember when exactly, probably early 1964. You're right that some movies played for well over a year back then. Was Layne's 'no' remark about "Send Me No Flowers" in response to the movie itself, or to the fiasco with his sec...

I just love the cultural references. Don and Layne trying to decide on a movie: "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, Send Me No Flowers, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (Don: mmm, Catherine Deneuve)." The release dates of the last two were spot on - late 1964, but It's a Mad World had been out a ...

I wouldn't mind a remake - it'll be almost 50 years. I'd look forward to it more than another A Star is Born with Beyonce and Russell Crowe anyway. Besides, some of the other parts would be nice to see with contemporary performers; Dame Maggie Smith in the Gladys Cooper role for example.
