Re: Critics Choice Awards

I would find it deeply worrying if Killers of the Flower Moon gets exactly 10 nominations. His prior two such efforts went home empty-handed. Gangs of New York and The Irishman.

Re: Critics Choice Awards

7 and 6. It's narrowing with the two big awards to go. I'd say if Cillian and Christopher win, then it's probably Oppenheimer.

Re: Critics Choice Awards

If Academy voting weren't more than half over, I'd say that speech alone would secure America Ferrera an Oscar nomination. That's the kind of fierceness she brought to Barbie and I think will resonate with many voters.

Re: PGA Award Nominations

I think we need to contextualize The Color Purple's box office performance. If you look back at past Tyler Perry films, they had a similar great debut and subsequent quick fade. From that context, I really don't think it should be considered a flop. It got an A CinemaScore, which is from the target ...

Re: PGA Award Nominations

I honestly can't see a way these aren't the Best Picture nominees. Air, The Color Purple, and May December desperately needed this to stay in. Sure Color Purple might still surprise, but what would it get in over? I can't imagine any of these. Animated Feature, however, I could see them swapping out...

Re: DGA Nominees

Lanthimos is Greek. He grew up in, was educated in, and spent most of his life in Greece. He moved to the UK from 2011 through 2021, so he had a 10-year residency in London, but has since moved back to Athens as his primary residence. "Poor Things" is, my guess, a British production. It do...

Before that, it was definitely Spielberg.

Re: DGA Nominees

Sorry, Greg. It was recent. Denis Villeneuve for Dune. That film got 10 nominations without a Best Directing citation.

Re: DGA Nominees

Here's a bit of a frame of reference. Greta Gerwig (through Sunday) had been nominated for 22 prizes. That's one more than Martin Scorsese and two less than Christopher Nolan. Celine Song has more citations than Yorgos Lanthimos. Those are the five most recognized. Glazer has 7 and Haynes has 6. Pay...

Re: SAG Nominations

This only stabilizes my belief that Todd Haynes cannot do anything to impress the Academy and May December looks like yet another in a long line of over-estimated Haynes films to collapse by the time the Oscar nominations come out. And I say that as someone who loves Haynes' films. Carol and Far fro...

Re: DGA Nominees

I think everyone is underestimating Barbie. Greta Gerwig not only made the box office hit of the year, but she did so without compromising her vision, following a formula, or otherwise succumbing to the traditional forces that homogenize big budget blockbusters. There will be a lot of respect for th...

Re: SAG Nominations

All of Us Strangers and Past Lives were shut out. As were Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest. Dafoe makes it in over Ruffalo. DiCaprio is out. May December also blanked. Other than Poor Things and The Holdovers, was there really a more ensemble-oriented film that could have taken The Color P...

Re: SAG Nomination Predictions

Look at the credits. At least their past eligibility was that each eligible actor had to have their own, individual name card and there was a requirement not to be listed after "also starring" or other such separating requirements.

Re: Golden Globe Predictions Contest

Thanks. I really am surprised I won. I was really trying to figure out with my selections what kind of group the organization wanted to be. In the end, they did what I expected them to do. The more members, the less outside-the-box they tend to be. It's why I think people who rag on the 300-member-p...
