Re: 1968-1977 Best Actress Winners
A lot of great winners, unlike their male counterparts. Katharine Hepburn's third Oscar was indeed her best, but that tie was underwhelming, because Joanne Woodward, Vanessa Redgrave and Patricia Neal were much better options than Barbra Streisand's funny and tiresome Fanny Brice. Maggie Smith's Jea...

Re: 1968-1977 Best Actor Winners
Brando is more iconic than great in The Godfather . George C. Scott and Gene Hackman are the only others I would consider voting, but the best is very easily Jack Nicholson. Cliff Robertson, John Wayne and Jack Lemmon won undeserved Oscars over much more memorable performances. Art Carney, Peter Fin...

Re: List of submissions to the 94th Academy Awards for Best International Film
Spain submits Fernando León de Aranoa’s The Good Boss , starring Javier Bardem. This is 2002 situation all over again, when they sent Fernando León de Aranoa’s Mondays in the Sun (starring Javier Bardem) instead of Almodóvar’s Talk to Her , and we all know how that ended up. All I hear and read here...

Re: 1968-1977 Best Supporting Actor Winners
Jack Albertson was indeed wonderful but he's not a supporting actor in The Subject Was Roses . John Mills is obviously very noticeable in Ryan's Daughter , but Trevor Howard was better in the same film. Ben Johnson has nine minutes of screentime in The Last Picture Show and the viewer still can form...

Re: 1968-1977 Best Supporting Actress Winners
Tatum O'Neal is excluded because of obvious category reasons, as entertaining as she is. Goldie is not as blatant, but definitely a co-lead. Helen Hayes is funny enough, but not for a win over Karen Black. Eileen Heckart was a compelling mother figure, but Susan Tyrrell should have won. Ingrid Bergm...

Re: 1958-1967 Best Actress Winners
Sophia Loren, Anne Bancroft, Julie Andrews, Julie Christie and Elizabeth Taylor's second would be great choices, but for me it was a tough call between Simone Signoret's sublime performance and Patricia Neal as Alma Brown, a magnificent creation that makes me forgive and forget the category fraud th...

Re: 1958-1967 Best Supporting Actor Winners
Burl Ives, cat or country, deserved it. I don’t share the animosity towards Hugh Griffith. Maybe not Oscar caliber, but he definitely makes an impression with his very brief role. Considering the film’s length, much briefer than Balsam’s or even Chakiris, both very limited performances. Balsam deser...

Re: 1958-1967 Best Supporting Actress Winners
Wendy Hiller was very good; Shelley Winters’ first Oscar was probably more deserved than her second; Shirley Jones’ slyness is used to great effect in Elmer Gantry ; Rita Moreno’s performance is iconic and she comes back this year with a movie named after the one she won for; Patty Duke (as good as ...

Re: 1948-1957 Best Actor Winners
Also Alec Guinness, without much hesitation. Only Brando and Olivier are threats among this group, although I don't dislike any of them. This would have been more distinguished had Holden won for Sunset Boulevard , Brando for A Streetcar Named Desire , Monty Clift for From Here to Eternity and James...

Re: 1948-1957 Best Actress Winners
I could very easily vote for Jane Wyman, Olivia de Havilland, Judy Holliday (she's wonderful and very underrated, no matter her competition), Vivien Leigh or Ingrid Bergman. Shirley Booth is clearly the weakest. But both mind and heart tell me it's Audrey all the way, for her unique breakthrough per...

Re: 1948-1957 Best Supporting Actor Winners
George Sanders’ brilliance all the way, with Walter Huston and Karl Malden a close second and third. Of the rest I would only consider Dean Jagger, Anthony Quinn in Viva Zapata! and Jack Lemmon in Mister Roberts. Sinatra won by default in the movie of the year in a very weak lineup. O’Brien was soli...

Re: 1948-1957 Best Supporting Actress Winners
Claire Trevor is the clear standout among this group for me, with Dorothy Malone and Eva Marie Saint also worthy of consideration. I think all of them are good, but maybe Hull’s and Umeki’s wins have aged the poorest.

Are you sure you pressed Minari? I voted for it too and it only has one vote. Sorry for being thorough, I wouldn’t like to see Promising Young Woman winning the poll.Big Magilla wrote:Minari and Nomadland.

I voted for Nomadland and Chloé Zhao.
