Re: R.I.P. Barbara Rush

Star of It Came from Outer Space ? Yes she was a lovely presence in the films you mention. That obituary headline is to attract readers - the Space film title. You think people today remember any of the films you have mentioned. Nobody does sadly. Ask any of the younger Board members here - apart f...

Re: 2024 Governors Awards

I think the host's silly never ending opening banter is to please the youthful tv audience who would probably rather listen to a stand-up comic-like banter than look out for old stars - most of whom they probably don't even recognise or know of anyway. Its only actors in the Marvel series (or stars ...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 1958

I've since changed my opinion on Burl Ives' win. His win for The Big Country was deserved. He is vicious at the start and then absolutely heartbreaking towards the end of the film (which is magnificent and one of Wyler's most underrated). There is more depth to his performance here than in Cat on a ...

Re: R.I.P. Louis Gossett, Jr.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I think he was the first black actor to win an Emmy award - for Roots.

He was memorable in so many films and made a superb Anwar Sadat in Sadat (1983).

He does not fit the Academy's usual choice of honoring doddery old actors.

Yes, they gave one to Angela Bassett but then we all know the reason behind that absurd choice.

Why is he unpopular with the Academy's board of governors?

Leslie Caron & Isabelle Adjani would be good choices too.

They should give one posthumous Honorary award each year to deserving actors or technicians who were never rewarded - Swanson, Burton, Irene Dunne....

Ferrari (Michael Mann, 2023) 8/10 There is clearly a sense of doom and gloom that prevades across this film. Could be why a film by Michael Mann failed to get the attention it deserved. It is a look-in at the life of Enzo Ferrari (Adam Driver) - Italian motor racing driver and entrepreneur, the fou...

Re: The 25th Annual Who'll Be Back?

A fantastic read as always, Mister Tee. I don't think Giamatti should be completely dismissed. I agree there has been a huge gap between his two nods and there is so far nothing on the horizon from him that signals another nod. However, this recent lead nod is sure to open him up to getting some int...

Re: Civil War reviews

There's a smell of deja vu about this film. The United States in post-apocalyptic mode with struggling survivors. Been there so many times in other big and small screen films. What's always novel is seeing the United States deeply entrenched in violence on its own shores. A delightful change from re...
