Re: Stay Safe Everyone!

I'm more than a little annoyed by how slow the Western countries have been at reacting to this. I never had a very high opinion of the health care authorities in here, but I didn't imagine they were this bad. They either imagined that this is just a regular flu virus, or that it would be trivial to ...

Meanwhile the virus is starting to spread here and we're still not doing much >.> There's a school near my commute where a teacher got infected and they're not even closing that school.

Re: Stay Safe Everyone!

I wish I could place myself in isolation but I don't think that's possible currently. I don't have a car so I'm reliant on public transport as well. We're a remote country and there aren't that many cases here yet, but I do need to commute through the busiest area in the country daily on public tran...

Re: Your best picture ballot

The truncated season made it even harder than usual for me to see all the Best Picture nominees before they open the envelopes, but I made it, just barely 1. Parasite 2. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 3. The Irishman 4. Joker 5. 1917 6. Marriage Story 7. Jojo Rabbit 8. Ford v. Ferrari 9. Little Women...

Re: 92nd Oscar Trivia

Well, spending almost all of their lives living in the U.S., except for some early childhood years that they probably don't remember anything about, makes me think of them as American.

Re: R.I.P. Kobe Bryant

The only person to win an Olympic Gold Medal and an Academy Award didn't get to boast about that for very long. Bryant was 41 when he died which has to make him one of the youngest Oscar winners to die. Heath Ledger was 28, Irving G. Thalberg was 37 and Howard Ashman and John Lennon were 40. I presu...

Re: 92nd Oscar Trivia

As far as Korean nominees go, Jennifer Yuh Nelson (nominated for Best Animated Feature for Kung Fu Panda 2 ) is Korean-American and Karen O (nominated for Best Original Song for Her ) is half-Korean on her mother's side. Su Kim nominated last year for Best Documentary is also Korean. Here's kind of...

Re: 92nd Oscar Trivia

This is the first time that all Best Director nominees are also personally nominated for Best Picture (as producers of their films). And not only that, but all but one of them are also nominated for screenwriting. Parasite and In the Absence are the first Korean films ever to receive Oscar nominatio...

Re: Campaign 2020

I'm always curious about doing these political "who agreed with you" tests even if I don't take them very seriously and even when it's not an election that directly concerns me. My top were Bloomberg at 11 followed by Biden and Klobuchar at 10. I feel a lot of the questions to be unimporta...

Re: Possible Consolidation of the Two Sound Categories

The Bohemian Rhapsody victory in Sound Editing made clear that distinction has been lost. Maybe uncertainty or plain ignorance among voters regarding the categories differences was a key factor for the BR victory... up to the ceremony, I was in disbelief about the film’s merits for the Sound Editin...

Re: Possible Consolidation of the Two Sound Categories

From 1982-2005 it was easy to distinguish the two categories because everyone knew that there were only three nominees for sound editing while sound mixing always had five. But how do unequal numbers help voters distinguish what an editor does from what a mixer does? I think the problem was that wh...

Re: 2019 Nobel Prizes

I have never heard of that film. Trying to look it up from Wikipedia, I suppose it was intended as an experimental film?

It didn't occur to me to check if Bob Dylan had directed any films, because I kind of presumed that if he had, I would've heard about it. Oh well.
