No, there weren't any nominating committees. It is a little surprising that O'Hara wasn't nominated for Quiet Man, given its popularity and the weakness of the Best Actress category that year. But then again, John Wayne wasn't nominated either.

By the way, my beloved had American Idol on in the other room tonight, so I heard much of the proceedings. Only in the world of American Idol could a cover of a top 40 single from 1970 -- "Vehivle" by one-hit wonders Ides of March -- come across as cool. Bo, who sang the song, seemed to m...

No! Really? You gotta be KIDDING! What is good about that song??? Because Donna Summer sings it? It does her no favors. Because it's camp? There's so much better camp out there, much of it sung by Donna herself. Or am I misreading the smilie? I think that "MacArthur Park" is ultimately a ...

I had a hard time choosing among his performances in The Apartment, Days Of WIne And Roses and Missing, but went with Wine and Roses because of a) the astonishing scene when he wakes up in a padded cell in a strait-jacket and b) because it's the film in which he most effectively undercuts his nice ...

Stephen Holden in today's New York Times (in an article about Barbara Cook): I thought back to the Broadway anthology unleashed on the April 5 edition of "American Idol," whose nine contestants struggled to articulate fragments of songs like "The Impossible Dream," "People,...

I knew Neil Patrick was gay ever since reading an interview back in the Doogie Howser days in which he said his favorite music was show tunes.

I've still got a few films to see from last year including new films from Rohmer, Godard, Rivette and In Good Company which does look very appealing. I'll do an update in a month or so. Precious, it’s been great fun reading your barrage of 70 years of Oscar shoulda beens. It’s especially rewarding ...

Put aside Dogville and The Incredibles. I wanna hear Damien's take on Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle! I think Harold and Kumar is an honorable addition to the Stoner/Stupid Buddy film sub-genre. It's not quite up there with The Bill and Teds or with the now-legendary Beavis and Butt-head (God,...

I should also point out I, too, loved Before Sunset , Bad Education and Kinsey and very much admired Dogville and The Dreamers . I was also a bit insulted that you think of me as a simpleton because I also happen to love The Incredibles . Apart from that, our assessment of 2004 films are more or le...

To think some of those poor saps probably donated money to that website. I also love Mr. O'Neil's request: If you have an Oscar or other ShowBiz award please donate it to Gold Derby. During these recent events, he had the greatest public meltdown since Ida Lupino on the stand in They Drive By Night.

I could also write a scholarly dissertation on why I think The Incredibles is a near-perfect masterpiece and probably the best superhero movie ever made. I'm way too lazy to do that. I need to focus my energies on trying to finish up a short story and an article that I would submit to a magazine. N...

Sonic, welcome back from vacation. Hope you had a great time. I looked at the Gold Derby sturm und drang a few times but couldn't keep up with it -- and I was never over there enough to get a firm handle on who anyone was (other than the people who posted here and there like you and Eric and and Da...

I guess I must be crazy then. I just saw it for the seventh time on DVD. I wouldn't necessarily say you were crazy. Maybe a simpleton, and definitely someone with too much time on his hands (and not enough worthwhile DVDs on hand to watch). :p Oh and I thought you hated Dogville , Damien (or...
