Kennedy's speech was moving, but people are refraining from pointing out he's obviously lost a step or two -- that was not the rip-roaring Teddy I'm used to. I even had the sense he was communicating to delegates, Don't clap too long; I can't stand here forever. I really worry he's sicker than he's...

I tuned in just in time to see Caroline Kennedy introduce the Ted Kennedy clip followed by his speech, then turned it off and back on at 7 P.M. PDT in time for Michelle Obama so I got the best of it without any of the boring stuff in-between. I haven;t seen any analysis yet of how Michelle's speech...

Further proof that today's "writers" are morons is this from the Comcast obituary: "Crane, who played one of the Tarleton twins in the 1939 classic, was 90. His wife, Terry Lynn Crane, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he died on Thursday of complications from diabetes. She ...

I'll give it another chance if you promise to re-visit Testament.

I, on the other hand, wish I could say the same thing about Cujo but unfortunately the mere mention of that repulsive film conjures up too many painful memories. Jane Alexander's heartrending performance in Testament is not only one of the best of 1983 but one of the best performances of all time b...

For me the three best Hollywood films of a very uneven year were Terms of Endearment, Tender Mercies and Testament, all of which belong in the top five along with Fanny & Alexander and depending on what day it is, either The Big Chill or The Right Stuff, so I'm glad to see Terms rescued. While ...

That said, good actors' politics shouldn't color our enjoyment of their work. Still I can't help but wonder if Robert Duvall became a Republican before or after he became a bore. His last good performance IMO was in 1989's Lonesome Dove. -- Big Magilla Really? I thought he was terrific in The Apost...

Neither Langella nor Sheen seem close to the real thing as I have vivid memories of both Nixon and Frost, but I suspect they grow on you during the course of the film. Langella's makeup is quite good. The music is too insistent. Hopefully it's toned down for the actual film, but given Howard's usua...

I can't stand Heaton either. Angie Harmon in Law & Order was OK but in the rather dull Women's Murder Club she seems to be trying to capture the glory of Law & Order's predecessor Jill Hennesey's success with Crossing Jordan. She fails miserably. That said, good actors' politics shouldn't c...

I can imagine, and believe, any English actor saying to another man that he desires him, without adding anything special to his gestures or his tone of voice. Well, any of them except Sean Connery, Albert Finney and Christopher Lee. I can’t imagine them telling another man they love him. Someone sh...

Well, they nominated how many composers for The Color Purple...? Why not? Some of the other tech categories, such as Sound, Visual Effects, etc., have 5 or more individuals involved in a single nomination. I don't see how there's a difference. Probably only to me since I've been recording the names...

To whom, then, is the award given - surely not to sixteen different composers?

The explanation can be nothing more than "to so and so for their outstanding such and such" but some attempt might be made to point out to those unfamiliar with the work what makes it so outstanding. For example, one can say the poignant documentary Paris Is Burning for its "depictio...
