Okay, have you ever written about that film on this board? Because I remember it topped your 2007 list and was like ?
Same.

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2023

There are few directors who made me as mad as I was after seeing the Darjeeling Ltd (I bitched the whole way home about that film.... and I was alone), so I'm still surprised at just how positive I became with him.

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2023

Don't know if it counts as a movie -- short, I presume -- but I watched The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar the other night. It's a perfectly pleasant thing, with a (typically) over-qualified cast. Wes at this point seems all in on the narrative-within-narrative-within-narrative, and I can see peopl...

Re: The Post-Festival Landscape

Scorsese already has four: The Aviator, Gangs of New York, The Irishman, Hugo.

That said, I'm surprised at how many directors I would've guessed that didn't meet that threshold, to be honest.

Golden Globes Adds Two New Categories:

Link

One dedicated to box office achievements; the other for stand up comics.

I actually like the latter idea

Re: Anatomy of a Fall reviews

Okri wrote Having now seen Anatomy of a Fall, I have to say I think Triet is completely out to lunch for really one reason. A lot of the film is in English. Not only that, English is important to the characterizations/plot AND the best scene of the film (I'd assert) is in English. I would wager the...

Re: The Post-Festival Landscape

a) 2019's best actor race stomps all over 2019's best actress race. Outside the nominees, you also had Christian Bale, Eddie Murphy, Taron Egerton and Robert de Niro (and Adam Sandler, if you want) b) That's a really good point - re distributors/what can they do. We saw this in 2019, where Neon drop...

Re: List of submissions to the 96th Academy Awards for Best International Film

Justine Triet just took to instagram and called "The Taste of Things" "boring." Off her Instagram: "To not risk winning the international feature Oscar, France chose not to submit Anatomy of a Fall (Palme d'Or winner and box office hit - almost a million tickets sold) but o...

I get to see both French films this week, so I'm more curious now, that's for sure.

My thoughts are argumentative, but I am not, so I'll just say that it's way too early for me to have any conviction in any prediction. I could even see Murphy missing out (a la Amy Adams in Arrival)

Given that Giamatti has lost out for prime Payne before and the category seems stacked, I'm surprised at the level of confidence people have.

Re: Post-Festival Predictions

The thing with The Colour Purple is that it's always been a relative blockbuster. The book won the Pulitzer, the 1985 movie nearly grossed 100 million at the time and was the 4th biggest hit of the year, the production of the stage musical earned back it's capitalization (costs), and the revival hit...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2023

I'll go to bat for it as more than just a cult film. Seligman is a very interesting filmmaker and this is an unexpected leap from her. I'm not necessarily excited to see the anxious realism of Shiva Baby go by the wayside but it confirms her (and her relationship with Sennott) as something to reall...
