Re: Roma reviews

I don’t disagree with much of what Italiano says here, but I hold the film in higher esteem than he -- I’m more a masterpiece-half-full than masterpiece-half-empty guy.. Or maybe, simply, not a masterpiece at all, Mister Tee? :) For the record, I mainly used that phrase for the glib sound of it. I'...

From what you write, he definitely wasn't.

Re: The Host of the 91st Academy Awards Is....

Some of us on this site had never heard of him I certainly have no idea of who this person is or what he did or said. In theory, of course I agree that anyone who expressed racist, sexist or homophobic ideas - even in the distant past - should be prevented from hosting an event which is even vaguel...

"Faggot" is a terrible word. Always - but I'd say even more if it is used by the "gay community". It doesn't change its meaning - or its derogatory aspect - depending on who uses it.

Re: AFI Top Ten

Either it's been a terrible year for American cinema, or these people of the AFI don't understand anything about movies. (A Star is Born? A Quiet Place? And I haven't seen Green Book or Mary Poppins yet, but, I mean, come on...). And yes, the Roma mention is a sign of such a cultural and intellectu...

Re: Roma reviews

For a movie which could be the first foreign language film (The Artist doesn't really count) to win the Best Picture Oscar, I expected much, much more, honestly. Technically flawless, obviously made with great care, but sadly ultimately lacking a real "raison d'etre". Well, Bergman, Felli...

At the end of the day I'll take Fellini over Cuaron any day. Actually I really should not even mention them in the same sentence. Yeah, it made me cringe. Gravitt's directon AND Fellini?! And I was right. To cringe, I mean. Yes, there is a scene which can be seen as a hommage to Fellini (you'll eas...

Re: List of submissions to the 91st Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film

The Cakemaker (Israel) 7/10 This has been one of those films that kept alluding me. I missed it at the Jewish Film Festival last year, then missed it at the Gay & Lesbian Film Festival earlier this year and then missed it on its general release because its virtually impossible to find any websi...

Re: National Board of Review

According to Schrader on the DVD and Blu-ray, Diary of a Country Priest was his main influence. I thought there was more of his Hardcore than Taxi Driver in it. Schrader himself is a bit scornful of being known primarily for Taxi Driver. He often says that no matter what he does, his obituary will ...

Re: R.I.P. Bernardo Bertolucci

I had the privilege of meeting him, many years ago. A true gentleman, ready to give advice to the young, and with an obvious love for that art called cinema which he had contributed to make great. Also, an Italian intellectual of a kind which doesn't exist anymore. Today with a colleague we tried to...

Re: Widows reviews

Italiano wrote And as for the comparisons with The Departed - well, that wasn't Scorsese's most multi-layered movie maybe, but it was still Scorsese, and Scorsese's movies have an urgency, a "vibe", often a rawness, which Widows lacks. This doesn't mean that Steve McQueen doesn't have his...

Re: Widows reviews

It's not a bad movie, it's certainly not a boring movie - but it's too lightweight to be really considered "important" in any way. And as for the comparisons with The Departed - well, that wasn't Scorsese's most multi-layered movie maybe, but it was still Scorsese, and Scorsese's movies ha...
