There is no requirement that the song has to be performed in the middle of the movie by actors. The requirement is only that the music branch voters have to attend screenings of the songs as they are used in the films. Thus, the presentation of a song sung by actors will have more resonance with th...

I hate going early in this game because I have to walk a fine lien between picking amongst favorites that I am reasonably certain someone else will chose and generally overlooked gems that I suspect no one else will. It's so much easier making up for slights later in the game. That said, 1983 wasn'...

I'll rescue Angela Lansbury and get rid of Ethel Barrymore in best supporting actress. Fwiw, I've only seen Gaslight . June 28th is Ethel Barrymore day on TCM. Anyone unfamiliar with her work should make a point of checking out their sampling of her films. Here's an excerpt from the TCM website's p...

It makes me wonder if perhaps the neglect the studio showed towards its holdings in terms of exploiting them for DVD customers represents a philosophical stance of a sort: "we want to encourage the continued booking of our films in cinema settings, and we intend to focus more of our attention ...

Universal is the second worst of the majors in recognizing the value of their classic films. The worst is Paramount, which sold off its pre-1950 films to Universal, then picked up the rights to Republic's catalogue and fails to see the value in any of its old films even cancelling planned DVD relea...

The problem with the way songs are now selected is that the music branch nomiantors are required to watch clips of the potential nominees in context which gives the advantage to songs that are performed in musicals over title and end title songs which had the advantage for a number of years.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is not the first animated feature. The first was apparently an Argentinean film made by a popular political cartoonist, though it's considered a "lost film". The oldest surviving animated feature is Lotte Reiniger's ornate shadow animation piece the Adventu...

Their desk reference book does notate frelease dates for foreign films so it's in the realm of posssibility that will do a foreign film list at some point but what would the criteria be? Since they consider non-American made films in the English language as foreign, a populist list would likely be ...

We started this year with the idea that we may not be able to come up with enough saves or replacements in the musical categories and may have to eliminate remaining nominees at some point yet we have already locked the best song nominees without including one of the year's immortals - "Spring...

They are totally inconsistent. I suspect Snow White was ranked so high because of its historical importance as the first full length animated feature - and a good one. At the other end of the spectrum I suspect more voters were familiar with A Few Good Men than Witness for the Prosecution. A shame.

If "sports" is a genre, then how does Caddyshack fit into it? Doesn't it subvert all the genre rules established in the other films? Isn't really a film of another "genre"- the comedy? The same thing struck me about Cat Ballou named as one of the ten best "westerns".

Group 1 Bing Crosby is rescued and replaces Cary Grant. Crosby's performance may not be great - it isn't even the best portrayal of a a priest in 1944 - Gregory Peck's Father Chisholm in The Keys of the Kingdom (1944 in N.Y., 1945 in L.A.) is that - but Crosby's popularity was all encompassing in 1...
