Re: 2019 Nobel Prizes

Well, I was way off with my predictions. I guess Greta Thunberg will have to wait for her Nobel Prize (unless her popularity runs out before that), Raoni Metuktire may be getting a bit too old to win. Abiy Ahmed is not an undeserving choice, but considering he has only been in office for a relativel...

Re: 2019 Nobel Prizes

I'm guessing they'll give the Peace Prize to environmental causes, since they've been trendy on media this year.

Raoni Metuktire and Greta Thunberg would be the obvious choices there - in fact they feel even too obvious for the Peace Prize Committee, especially Thunberg.

Re: Campaign 2020

The Democratic Party has plenty of qualified younger candidates, it feels insane to me that there's people as old as Biden, Sanders or even Warren polling so highly. A political leader in their 80s is a huge unnecessary risk, as their health can deteriorate rapidly and they recover much worse from h...

Re: Campaign 2020

I can't believe that the primary seems to be fully going already. Any predictions on who will win the primary? I used to think Cory Booker looked most likely to "fit" the part, but he still seems to be lagging a lot in polls. So now I'm thinking that Kamala Harris will come out on top. I h...

Re: The 2019 Honorary Oscars

Lynch is obviously deserving, I'm not so sure about the others.

Studi feels way too much like an ethnic token. Wertmüller feels like she's getting an Honorary Oscar for getting an Oscar nomination, which is kind of weird.

Re: New Developments III

You only need two things for printing money (or whatever you want to call it) to become a real policy - an incompetent President and an incompetent Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve. So I'd say with Donald Trump we're about halfway getting there. And Trump is certainly working his way to get...

Re: R.I.P. John Singleton

John Singleton's career was the most extreme example of starting at the top and making his way to the bottom that I can think in Hollywood, at least in recent decades. I wonder if there is now going to be some effort to re-evaluate some of his less successful work. The youngest Best Director nominee...

Re: Your best picture ballot

I just barely managed to see all the Best Picture nominees before the awards are handed out. I almost wish I hadn't as this is definitely my least favorite line-up since I started regularly following the Oscars in the late 90s. BlacKkKlansman and Roma were the only films I really liked, and neither ...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

It's too early to say which way the Democratic Party is headed in. One part of the candidates seem to be intelligent opportunists who are willing to say what it takes to get elected but whose actual competence and interests are difficult to determine. Another group consists of populists who appear t...

Re: Details of the February 24th Presentation

It feels insane that they figured that cutting 10-15 min of the broadcast would be worth the inevitable backlash. It's particularly odd that they're trying it this year when Best Picture nominations for Black Panther , Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born mean that the ratings are going to go up in ...

Re: Reactions

I'm not sure Free Solo counts as an IMAX documentary, but if it does, does this make it the first IMAX documentary nominated for documentary feature? By coincidence, I just noticed that there's Fires of Kuwait , which received a nomination for Documentary Feature back in 1992 - in spite of being un...

Re: Everything Is Great and Amazing

I'm slightly confused about how the famously complex U.S. health care system actually works, so it's not actually clear what they are proposing here, or why, or how serious they are about their propositions. My confusion is not because of lack of interest, or because of lack of effort about learning...

No, he wasn't "that bad"... He was WORST than bad, probably the worst thing that ever happened to Venezuela...
Perhaps Anonymous was only anticipating what things were going to be like with Maduro.
