Re: R.I.P. Helen Reddy

There was a really great bit on the Late Show in the mid-90's during the audience talent show where she "happened" to be in the crowd and hijacked the show with "I Am Woman". Great sense of humor and a pleasant voice, "Angie Baby" is an underrated gem.

Re: R.I.P. Eddie Van Halen

He had been battling cancer on and off for the better of two decades so although this is terrible news, it's not such a bolt out of the blue. He was a huge part of my musical development when I was younger and Van Halen's music remains a cherished part of my collection. My circle of fellow musicians...

Re: R.I.P Chadwick Boseman

This is truly disheartening, a similar shock to David Bowie's passing after a secret cancer battle, though of course Boseman was just starting out with some well-regarded performances in decent biopics and of course an iconic turn as Black Panther. He seemed likely to enjoy a successful, possibly Os...

Re: 92nd Oscars: Directing

The tribute to and spontaneous standing ovation for Martin Scorsese was just a great Oscar moment. Absolutely! The Irishman was Scorsese's second movie to post a 0-10 record in a night after Gangs , but Bong's tribute to him was just pure class, and the reception was wonderful, it was a great Oscar...

Not sure if the old rule about Foreign Film belonging to the country (in this case, South Korea) and not the filmmaker personally is still the same rule, but heck, let Bong have 4.

I thought she was making some kind of statement with the haircut, no idea about the cancer! A worthy win for a great documentary.

It IS an Oscar-winning song performed by an international superstar who just happens to have a brand new album out... it felt like it raised the energy.

R.I.P. Kobe Bryant

Being that he IS an Academy Award-winning filmmaker in some capacity, it's worth mentioning that the basketball legend died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas today. I think his legacy was immeasurably tarnished by the rape allegation against him in 2003, but he was a sporting legend.

Re: 92nd Oscar Trivia

(POSSIBLE SPOILER FOR ANYONE YET TO SEE ALL NINE BEST PICTURE NOMINEES) Marriage Story is the only one of the nine candidates whose narrative doesn't involve the death of a significant character. Looking back over the expanded best picture field, I can't find a similarly mortality-obsessed bunch --...

Note, Crouching Tiger was nineteen (now twenty) years ago. Boy, that's a thought.
