Re: Post-Festival Predictions

Joker and A Star is Born both did Venice (and TIFF) but they both also opened soon after those festivals. Warner historically opens their Oscar hopefuls in early Fall and then reserves December for "entertainments" although they have had Oscar contenders released in December, obviously. (...

Re: Post-Festival Predictions

The Color Purple has test screened four or five times, which might be an indication that someone thought that there was something not working in that movie.

Re: New Developments III

Beyond that, though, I don't really understand why any Republican is running as not-Trump when there are a half dozen of them (or more). Is it only to be his VP? I can't imagine him selecting anyone who was on that stage. Especially since none of them are willing to actually go against him in any r...

Re: List of submissions to the 96th Academy Awards for Best International Film

Hamaguchi's film doesn't release in Japan within the eligibility window so was not eligible here, but should be next year. (Although from what I've read, I question whether they'll submit it then.)

Re: Best Picture and Director 1972

It sounds like The Emigrants benefited from a longer release window but we're lucky that even made it in (I assume, I haven't seen it yet). It is really great in my opinion! It and The New Land are pretty impossible to separate in my mind, and if you ever get a chance to watch them in pretty close ...

Re: New Developments III

I mainly mean that a large part of his personality has been based on things like medical/vaccine conspiracy theories, which a large segment of the MAGA crowd is super into, and on trying to establish himself as a populist, anti-establishment outsider. (Although he's not, as a Kennedy.)

Re: New Developments III

I think that one thing in Ramaswamay's favor is that he came in kind of unknown, at least to the masses; didn't come in with years of Trump associations like Pence or Haley. Doesn't have the issue of having taken a stance against Trump like Will Hurd or Christie (again) Pence. Hasn't built his whole...

Re: R.I.P. William Friedkin

His Twelve Angry Men , which wasn't a play originally, but of course has been staged many times since the Lumet film was released, never leaves the courthouse, unlike Lumet's film which ends on the courthouse steps. He makes good use of that juror room. I prefer his film to Lumet's, although I do li...

Re: R.I.P. William Friedkin

In my research on Coppola (now the earliest surviving Best Director winner), Friedkin has emerged as an interesting supporting character/antagonist to Coppola through that 70's run. Their careers paralleled each other's in interesting ways. He was considered for the directing job that Coppola ultima...

Re: Oppenheimer reviews

It also deserved a better score. I'm in the middle on the score. I think it is effective in the film and well-used, but I miss scores with melodies and themes and such. Many still do, but the cacophony of different sounds and instruments seems to be the trend on the popular scores now. I've seen so...

Re: Oppenheimer reviews

No, although it does suggest somewhat obliquely that she may have been killed as a national security risk, due to her communist associations. (I don't remember if the movie shows it, but she did leave a suicide note, so it was almost definitely suicide.)

Re: Best Supporting Actress 1969

TCM may be showing Last Summer overnight tonight. "may be" is doing some heavy lifting here. I believe they are, but we may struggle to watch it in a world where even "cable" is done through the internet in many cases. If you look on their schedule on their website, it shows it a...

Re: Oppenheimer reviews

Did the Barbenheimer double feature yesterday. Had only planned on Oppenheimer yesterday, but the person I had planned to see this with had something come up. I'll have more thoughts on this later, maybe after more have seen it, and maybe after I've seen it again. It's not a spoiler type of movie, b...

Re: Barbie reviews

It's a fun movie, but it's also like five different movies, five different tones all in one, jumping back and forth, and Gerwig is very good at some, like creating Barbieland and Barbie's experiences in the real world, and very very bad at others: anything dealing with corporate Mattel is awful and ...
