Re: The Banshees of Inisherin reviews

Farrell would be the front-runner for Best Actor if it weren't for Brendan Fraser's back from the dead performance in The Whale. I can see him outpolling Fraser in various critics' awards but not the Globes, SAG, or the Oscars. Well, we've seen our fair share of late welcomes to the nominee pool, e...

Re: My first Oscar predictions of the year (pre-fall festival)

Nominations-wise, I wouldn’t bet against a David O. Russell film. He’s got an outstanding track of leading his actors to nominations at the very least so maybe Amsterdam should be taken into consideration, even at this early stage.

Be Kind Rewind and YouTube Channels

Guys, have you seen the Be Kind Rewind videos on YouTube? I highly recommend them. Each episode is deeply researched, very insightful, and told with grace and a certain elegance that I appreciate. The most recent video, about Shirley McLaine, is great, but actually I haven’t seen a single video from...

Re: New Academy Members

Caitriona Balfe and Jamie Dornam failed to get some quite expected nods earlier this year, but they ended up being members of the Academy as soon as it was possible.

Re: Satellite Winners

Since apparently they were not playing the game of being a predictor, these results are intriguing to some extent: TPOTD wins the acting trifecta plus directing but still loses Best Picture. And Coda still won Adapted Screenplay over TPOTD. This only highlights how admired TPOTD was but how little w...

Re: The 23rd Annual Who'll Be Back?

Normally I divide the actors’ bonus round in two –- someone who contended for nomination this year but fell short, then just any old actor who appeared somewhere this year and seems a hot prospect for eventually making the Oscar list. But this year they’re kind of mashed together in my head. (Remem...

Re: Telecast Discussion

Here's a thought on how to handle Will Smith's win. Have the full Academy membership revote the Best Actor award. If he wins again, he gets to keep the Oscar. If he loses, the award goes to whoever comes out on top, with an asterisk. This was done with The Godfather’s score nomination but for reaso...

Re: Telecast Discussion

If they bring Smith back, it will be to present Best Actress, not Best Picture. And they usually reserve Best Picture for someone Important (TM). Someone important like… Will Smith? Even when he wasn’t an Academy Award winning actor, he already presented BP back in 2014 (12 Years a Slave). But I ge...

Smith and Rock will present Best Picture next year…

At 67 years, 331 days, Jane Campion is now the third-oldest person to win Best Director, having surpassed George Cukor, and behind only Eastwood and Polanski.

Re: Your Best Picture ballot

I still have a few films to watch, but here’s how I would have voted:

1. The Power of the Dog
2. CODA
3. Nightmare Alley
4. West Side Story
5. Dune
6. Don’t Look Up
7. King Richard

Looking forward to see how my own list will change once I catch up with the three films I’m missing right now.

Re: Notable Firsts and Records

So… in the end… - The Power of the Dog is the first film with 12 nominations to receive just one award. Having won just one, it actually ties with the two all-time losers by having lost 11 nods. - Now we have three characters that have granted Academy Awards to two different performers: Vito Corleon...
