My five favorite Mikio Naruse / Hideko Takamine collaborations: 1. Floating Clouds. She's absolutely unforgettable as the unrequited lover in virtually every frame of this bleak, but affecting masterpiece. A towering performance. Available on British DVD (BFI). 2. Her Lonely Lane. How many actresse...

It might be more honest, but can we really say that the list of films excluded are unknown to the voting body? The list of films excluded is endless. Some are going to be known to the voting body and some aren't. If they don't use their own rigidly-defined criteria for what's eligible for their awa...

It might be amusing, but it's not necessarily narrow-minded, and it's arguably justified. There's no way Monahan could have written his script without the work of Mak & Chong having come before him, but the scripts are substantially different enough that it would be reasonable for WGA members t...

Of course they're trying to influence the Oscars, but what's the point of influencing them if you're not doing so from a particular point of view? Any other approach is really more like playing predictor than puppeteer. The SAG and DGA may feel that their more inclusive rules give them more credibi...

4. “Meek’s Cutoff,” director: Kelly Reichardt Why wasn't this given an Oscar qualifying release? I heard Michelle Williams' supporting performance was dynamite. Might've even gotten her into two categories this cycle (alongside her lead work in Blue Valentine). Meek's Cutoff is an unlikely Oscar ve...

They share time period and a central character who can't stop lying. The Carrey film is much better though. It was also the first one released (to film festivals and foreign territories- it's taken nearly two years to be properly released stateside.)

Along with its cinematography, I Am Love pretty much coasts on its John Adams music. However, it's not an original score but a collage of previously-composed pieces. Don't expect it to be nominated.

Fernando lives here in the Bay Area, and is just as brilliant in person as in print. Finally met him (and Jon as well, who I believe recently moved away from the Bay?) this year at a couple of film festivals. Love that he picked the Resnais as his #1- think we might've been at the same screening.

Come And See is a masterpiece. I hope you can track it down sometime, Mister Tee, though be prepared for one of the most harrowing war films of all time. Was Safe generally considered a dud in 1995? Or is that more your own opinion, Big Magilla? I have to admit I wasn't paying much attention to ind...

Thanks Eric. I'm glad we see eye to eye on Lee Evans' amazing performance in Funny Bones. Magilla, had we gone to a third round (which, overall, I think would've been excessive, although I do miss Oscar Guy's voice as I'm sure he would've pushed Babe into some more deserving categories) I don't thi...

Me too. Tears of the Black Tiger was the first Thai film I saw that really made me sit up and take notice (I was living in the country at that time), and I've liked each of Wisit's subsequent films so far. I've seen one of the films in the original Red Eagle series starring the all-time-biggest Tha...

How long is Oscar Guy on vacation? Is he going to be able to contribute to this game?

(I'll have my selections up by the end of the evening)
