Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

I'd love to know where you're getting your intel for this because stars seem ready to align for both him and Gilroy. Though that new title, sheesh... I know, that title, my god. Anyways, to answer your question; If we're going by statistics, If Gilroy couldn't produce an Oscar Nomination for Jake G...

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

You're definitely going out on a few limbs and more power to you, though I think some of those risks are astronomically unlikely to pay off. Intrigued by your Streep placement, though - I was playing with the idea of putting her in supporting but most reviews of the Hannah script I've read make it c...

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

I'm rethinking a few small predictions - replacing Darkest Hour with Detroit in Best Picture (the question here is of course whether this will be The King's Speech or, say, The Last King of Scotland - now leaning towards the latter). I still think Annihilation will hit if it's moved back to this yea...

Re: No Man's Land, I'm sure the percentage-of-English rule was implemented after that year. ETA: I can't find the exact year the rule was put in place (or at least enforced more heavily), but The Band's Visit was disqualified in 2007 for having too much English dialogue and I don't remember it being...

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

Also, I'm sorry, but Denzel Washington in 'Roman Israel, Esq' IS NOT GOING TO GET NOMINATED. Someone had to say it. I'd love to know where you're getting your intel for this because stars seem ready to align for both him and Gilroy. Though that new title, sheesh... I'm ready to recant my Downsizing...

Precious Doll wrote:Speaking of Saoirse Ronan, does anyone know what has happened with The Seagull. Filmed in 2015 and still unseen.

That can't be a good sign.
Slated for this year apparently, but most likely a dud I'm guessing. If it'll show up anywhere I'd say Toronto?

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

I'd really like to know what's going on with On Chesil Beach - when it was announced Saoirse Ronan looked like a sure thing. Great role for an ascendant star with a screenplay by McEwan himself. Hope it doesn't go the way of, say, Brighton Rock or Suite Française.

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

These are my current predictions for the big 8 categories - I'll do techs later. I just did a big overhaul and I'm going out on a couple limbs here - some with regards to category placement but namely, assuming 2017 release dates for both Roman Israel, Esq. and Annihilation (the first next-to-confir...

Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

Feel free to use this thread to post your predictions (not competitively as in the Psychic thread, but as benchmarks for discussing the race). This should hold us over until the excitement truly starts around the time of Venice and TIFF. I've recently rehauled my predictions and will post them later...

Re: Psychic Oscar Predictions Contest!

Will there be a thread for predictions throughout the rest of the year? Ones unconnected to the competitive game in this thread?

Re: Halfway Through 2017

I think something smart Universal could do would be to do a limited re-release of Get Out around awards season. It's truly been a phenomenon and it certainly has the status of 'event film' now - there are a lot of people who would happily watch it again in theatres, and this time bring their friends...

Re: 2017 Oscar Invitees

Most surprising to me is that Betty White is only now being invited, at 95 years old! (what an investment) What film credits would suggest that Betty White would have been invited previously? She's got a long, long resume, for sure, but it's almost entirely tv. Personally I'd have expected her to b...

Re: Psychic Oscar Predictions Contest!

I have liked Wright's past films and I think he's a cleverer craftsman and more auteuristic filmmaker than people give him credit for, but I can't say Darkest Hour looks interesting on paper - that being said, it's a revered actor who only got his career due in a (surprise) nomination quite recentl...

Re: 2017 Oscar Invitees

I know the film isn't popular but I loved Kikuchi's performance in Babel and it's one of my personal highlights from this century's nominations so far. She's developed a nice little portfolio of strong indie work both in the US and at home with some high-profile commercial films thrown in there as w...

Re: Psychic Oscar Predictions Contest!

Torn between my love of lists and my desire to see my pet favourites represented somewhere and my disgust at the deterioration of the industry and critical integrity lol. That means your foresight sucks and you should stop then. There's no way Gary Oldman will win Best Actor. Your part of the probl...
