Such a strange 30th! There is a film I find calmingly beautiful [Another Year], an industry I find constipated, a circle of friends I find fairly wonderful, an album I'm infatuated with (aside from Cee-Lo, I can't imagine a sultry smoother album this year than Kanye's) and a girl I'm really quite i...

(Damien @ Jan. 19 2011,3:23) Blue Valentine Excruciating to sit through, and featuring two of the most insufferable characters on celluloid in years, and -- clearly not what the filmmakers were intending -- that pair is just as unappealing in the sequences when they're younger and the flame of love...

Barney's Version (Richard J. Lewis) Aside from the fact that this becomes a truly miserabilist slog in its final hour, Barney's Version is immediately of interest because it features the performance of Paul Giamatti's life. Now, whether or not this is my favorite performances of his, I don't know. ...

Best Comedic/Musical Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Song, Best Original Score, and Best Foreign Language Film. Kind of amazed that Melissa Leo won, and after seeing Casino Jack I'm a little amazed that Kevin Spacey didn't win, not because it or he is good, but because it'd be a very ...

Casino Jack (George Hinkenlooper) It's not difficult to see where this film goes wrong. Lord knows, it's not as if those involved were working with bad material. It starts to go wrong on the page. Norman Snider is a TV guy and he's doing standard TV biopic hack-work. All fine and well, and possibly...

(OscarGuy @ Jan. 17 2011,2:50) I'm not saying that Princess and the Frog being hand-drawn is why it was better. I just think it had a stronger, more effective heroine, a strong supporting cast and yes it did have some gorgeous hand-drawn magic. I didn't say you said that. It does look like beautifu...

I wanted to support The Princess and the Frog but I didn't. I don't entirely remember why not. Word of mouth was pretty lousy, but I like that Disney is re-finding its identity within the context of, let's be honest, the model that brought it out of twenty-plus years of financial and creative tails...

I'm not sure this category is as locked up as we think. Annette Bening and Natalie Portman have nothing in their way and Jennifer Lawrence seems like a very good bet. However, Michelle Williams is in a dirty movie that failed a SAG nom, and there is some residual indifference to Nicole Kidman these...

Oh, I don't go see movies like these in theaters. They may be great for families, but they also ruin them.

Tangled (Nathan Greno & Byron Howard) This is kinda great. Why is nobody talking about this as one of the great years for animated films? Or rather one of the pretty great years for pretty good animated films? It can't compare to The Iron Giant, Princess Mononoke, South Park, and Toy Story 2, b...

I am completely astonished at the tastelessness of Ricky Gervais' performance tonight. It's like he took his Mel Gibson joke from last year and kept the entire evening on a wavelength of that cruelty...and I love it. These celebrities are terrified.

(ITALIANO @ Jan. 16 2011,7:57) ...Still, despite its sincere intentions, despite its heavy subject and all the grief and desperation in sight, it's never exactly profound as one could hope. I was surprised at how quickly I forgot it after I saw it - not what you'd expect from a movie dealing with s...
