Re: Best Actor 2017

Talked about as possibilities (or shouldabeens) throughout the year were Robert Pattinson (Good Time), Jeremy Renner (Wind River), Sam Elliott (The Hero), Kumail Nanjiani (The Big Sick), James McAvoy (Split), Jacob Tremblay (Wonder), Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049), Donald Sutherland (The Leisure ...

Re: Let's Talk About Best Actress

The Globe win for Stone (abetted, as per tradition, by serious shmoozing of the voters) threw me off course, but, once SAG fell in line, I figured Sarandon was good for the victory. I wouldn't say she was a shoo-in the way too many are today, but she was a solid favorite. "schmoozing" or ...

Re: Oscar Nominations

Has anyone done a count of the nominations per film? I counted 7 for West Side Story, as compared to the 11 that the original film garnered (and won 10). I think the Power of the Dog leads with an impressive 12. Belfast (8) "Belfast" has 7. Also, "West Side Story" did very well,...

Re: Oscar Nominations

First quick thoughts: - HUGELY happy for Jessie Buckey; Me too. I thought she deserved a nod for "Wild Rose" a couple years back. - Licorice Pizza underperformed I think it overperformed. It got Picture, Directing and Screenplay. With the controversy over the characters' age differences, ...

Happy to see Penelope Curz and Javier Bardem have become the first married couple since Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton to be nominated for acting in the same year, although Bardem's performance was not one of my favorites. Let's hope that unlike previous married couple nominees, Vivien Leigh a...

Kaminski missing ASC was bad enough; also missing BAFTA seems really fatal.
The Academy voting ended two days before the BAFTA nominations were announced. Are we expecting that much crossover, especially considering that BAFTA uses committees for several categories now?

HarryGoldfarb wrote While Kutsor keeps showing up consistently in this precursors’ stage, Matlin, the original “sure” contender from CODA, is nowhere to be found. Re: Who Do You Want to See Host the 94th Oscars?

I can picture Tom Holland hosting, but I'm not sure how his monologue would go. I could be stubborn and say "Billy Crystal" for a tenth time, but not sure that would help bring a younger audience, unless he was paired with someone like Whoopi Goldberg. If Steve Martin and Martin Short were...

Has there been a movie released this year that had as much enthusiasm going into a week and less coming out of it? Going into the weekend, it was the movie destined to save movies. It's leaving the theaters with the stink of failure on it like no movie since... oh! In the Heights. I'm still looking...

Wallace says he wants to try to expand his scope to other areas, rather than just politics. That could mean more celebrity...
