Re: Pieces of a Woman
Nobody is getting nominated for a film by Kornél Mundruczó and this is not to be taken as a slight to the director by me it is just that his previous work is so far removed from the orbit of the Academy and I don't see why this film, just because it happens to be in English should be any different. ...

If Lillian Gish has been nominated for The Whales of August (1987) it would be hard to imagine her loosing to Cher in Moonstruck or anybody else for that matter.

Re: The VCR / DVR / Streaming Alert Thread
For anybody trying to watch their way through the book 1001 Movies to See Before You Die (I think that's the title), Youssef Chahine's Cairo Station (1958) has turned up on Netflix (of all places) along with about 10 or so of his other films. Cairo Station is a a classic and must see film (a long fo...

Re: Best Actress 2004
Wasn't Crash already a year behind (i.e., it had played Toronto in 2004, and was already being delayed)? It's hard to imagine them holding it yet another year. Now, let's pretend that Crash is released in 2004 and Million Dollar Baby in 2005! Of how about Crash being rushed into after its 2004 Toro...

Also worth remember that Imelda Staunton was not unknown to the British voting block. She has long been very well known in the UK industry (not to mention some cinema goers like myself) for a good decade and a half before Vera Drake. In a Staunton vs. Benning showdown I think Staunton would have scr...

I don't have any real for Nolan but have enjoyed some of his previous films notably The Dark Knight & Inception. I really lost interest during Tenet because the whole damn enterprise becomes too convoluted with all this time travel incorporated into the storyline. I simply couldn't get engaged a...

Never heard of them but if that group are made up of people from around the world that explains Toni Collette's nomination for Muriel's Wedding.
Being an Australian/French co-production, Muriel's Wedding was released in Australia and France in 1994.

Re: Best Actress 1994
Nell - one of the worst films ever made or ever nominated for an Oscar. Jodie Foster's performance would have to be one of the worst if not the worst ever nominated for an Oscar. When I saw it back in 1994 at the cinema when we weren't groaning at the badness of the film we were laughing ourselves s...

Re: Stay Safe Everyone!
as I've said before, the Covid strain appears to be far more deadly in the West than in our neck of the woods. Maybe. Maybe not. There are so many factors involved. This short article that recently appeared in The Guardian pretty much sums up some of the differing views. Only time will tell: https:...

Raggedy Man (1981) Jack Fisk 10/10 Remember how Eric Roberts, after King of the Gypsies and then this, was touted as being the next big leading man? He’s had an astounding number of credits but largely fell off the radar after Runaway Train in 1985, for which he received his sole Academy Award nomi...
