Re: PGA Award Nominations
re: The Color Purple When I was thinking of it as a best picture nominee, it was because I thought SAG AND the general public would go for it in a big way. I didn't give my credence to the fact that it was "avoiding" the festivals because I don't really think in those terms/consistently ha...

Re: PGA Award Nominations
If this turns out to be the AMPAS 10, can you remember a better slate? Of the 8 I've seen to date, Maestro is probably the least good -- and i mostly quite liked Maestro. (The two remaining are Poor Things and the Zone of Interest, and seeing how they're among the year's most acclaimed, it's hard t...

Re: DGA Nominees
The most recent figure who shares a lot in common with Gerwig/Barbie is George Miller/Mad Max: Fury Road, a box office success that people discounted because it was a populist piece, not strictly an artistic one. I think this point is very salient. Are there examples of commercial plays getting lef...

Re: SAG Nominations
a) I think Brown also benefited from the fact that he's a popular television actor. We've seen that before - Jennifer Aniston, Steve Carrell, Cloris Leachman, Holly Hunter have all gotten nominations for films at the SAGs that didn't translate to the Oscars b) I sometimes wonder if those performers ...

Re: Globes Post-Mortem
a) Not gonna lie, I listen to the Oppenheimer soundtrack at least once a week. Curious to see the film again to listen in context. b) It's interesting to hear Schindler's List cited as a sweeper. 7 wins is probably the maximum a film can win without it really feeling like a sweeper for me. Though it...

I wonder if five runners-up without any victories is the most for the National Society - re Oppenheimer.

Re: BAFTA Long Lists
a) Well, All of Us Strangers lives to fight another day. Now if only Fox Searchlight would let me see it. That's the other reason why I'm doubting it b) re: Score, I have no memory of the Killers of the Flower Moon music at all, so it's performance this season has been staggering to me. There's a lo...

Re: Last Predictions of the Year
Some musings instead of predictions a) I'm really gonna need BAFTA to go over the top for All of Us Strangers for me to continue predicting it outside of screenplay - though the Barbie news has me worried even there. Maybe throw the supporting categories out of kilter and nominate Foy, Bell AND Mesc...

Re: Poor Things reviews
Yeah, I liked it a lot. Fun to see with an audience - they clearly didn't know what to expect. I want to see it again to see if the post-wedding scenes really hold up [to my understanding, the only wholly invented section]. Lanthimos' Lisbon resembles Fassbinder's Brest, which I found delightful. An...

Re: Oscar Shortlists
In case anyone's wondering what the hell "The Fire Inside" from Flamin' Hot is...yes, you knew deep down: it's Diane Warren! Apparently, these days, the Warren claque not only insists on nominating her, they choose the most obscure of her yearly credits. 80 for Brady was evidently too mai...
