Re: Best Supporting Actor 1948

I've got to agree with Magilla here. Treasure is a great film that gets better with age and I'll agree that it contains Bogart's best performance. While Huston may be too wily in this role, he still towers above the other actors here. The film never gets stale and portrays paranoia better than most...

Re: Melancholia - Lars Von Trier's newest film

I've been a major fan of Kirsten Dunst ever since Interview With The Vampire. I think she was particularly award-worthy in Crazy/Beautiful -- a wonderful, touching performance and she was also perfect as Tobey Maguire's girlfriend in the Spider-man pictures; they were terrific together.

Re: Best Supporting Actor 1948

Usually I love ''over-the-top'' but I found Huston simply unbearable and most annoying.....maybe I need to revisit Sierra Madre. Sierra Madre is a film, the reputation of which -- like that of director John Huston -- has rightfully diminished over the years. No reason to give it another two hours o...

Re: Best Supporting Actor 1948

First to go, Jose Ferrer - portentous in a portentous movie. Next, Cecil Kellaway, always a likable performer but here a wee bit too twee. Walter Huston was a great actor and usually a very subtle one, but in Treasure of the Sierra Madre, he is uncharacteristically broad, albeit nevertheless enjoyab...

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked (Mike Mitchell) Although not as narratively rich nor emotionally heartfelt and affecting as the first two entries in the series, the film is filled with pleasures. Because of the setting, there are last satirical digs at contemporary society and popular culture, ...

I think most of us are equally obsessive. I write notes on every movie I see during the course of the year, and use a 4 star system. And you certainlt saw some great films this year. Glad to see Kiss Me Deadly rated so high. Amazing film. It's in my all-time Top 20. (I'll be posting an all time best...

Re: The Descendants

One of the most sour movies in recent (or not so-recent) memory, this is a film in which each character has no redeeming quality – or even any recognizably human trait. For a filmmaker who is character- (rather than narrative-) based, Alexander Payne has oddly always seemed to have nothing but disda...

Re: Last Seen Movie - The Latest Movie You Have Seen; rating

Claire's Knee (Eric Rohmer, 1971) One of Rohmer’s wisest and most wonderful, a wry contemplation of self-deception and self-servingness and of winding one’s way through the unexpectedness of the every day. A lovely comedy of manners in which the mind struggles with the heart. Beautifully acted, espe...

Re: J. Edgar reviews and fall-out

This is a solid, well-crafted biography maintains the interest while never becoming particularly exciting. Other than excellent performances, the picture doesn’t offer much of anything that you couldn’t get from reading the Wikipedia entry on Hoover, although the film does make half-a-stab at positi...

Re: Melancholia - Lars Von Trier's newest film

I'm largely in sync with Sonic on this silly movie. So von Trier thinks the world is a lousy place. Too bad he can’t express that attitude in any but the most obvious and stupid ways, merely capturing the characters arbitrarily and unconvincingly doing things to express that angst. The film is extra...
