I wouldnt say that Sabin's view on the movie was just mixed, but even so, coming from someone who believes The Hurt Locker is so much better, well, it makes you think (and there are others, like Okri, who didn't like it much). It's funny that you say that one should simply read what one writes... I...

The Hurt Locker comes so achingly close to this.

It's very careful to get as far as it can from THAT, actually.

From the scenario or from the fatalist quality I'm describing?

Speaking of which... /The Hurt Locker/ (Kathyn Bigelow) (SLIGHT SPOILERS) Still staunchly pro. There's little doubt in my mind now that it's thesis ("War is a Drug") is detailed in the third act in a limited fashion. I find its conclusion a little disingenuous. We are asked throughout the...

I understand Avatar winning Best Picture, but it's such a triumph of producing rather than directing.

I don't have much time for individual threads. This was a pretty good show. I can only imagine how much more engaged I would have been if any of these movies were any kind of great. But they're not, and it's simple as that. It's like 2000 when it was a true coin-flip between Gladiator, Traffic, and...

Up is a gorgeous, gorgeous score and if it wins it will be the best winner in this category since The Fellowship of the Ring, maybe even further back. It's just beautiful. I would love to see Alexandre Desplat nominated for Fantastic Mr. Fox, Nathan Johnson for The Brothers Bloom, James Newton Howa...

I'm for Michael Stuhlbarg or even Damon, but Downey, Jr. is awesome in Sherlock Holmes. I have no problem.

I kind of agree. There's very little sad acknowledge about what exactly has transpired, very little outside world except Steve Coogan's cook. I'm not one to gripe when literally everything else in this film is so tasty.

Aside from Streep, and to a lesser-extent Bigelow, Mo'Nique, and Waltz, I don't think there are any locks in this lineup. And maybe not even them! That's kind of interesting. (EDIT -- w/ TV) Best Dramatic Picture - Up in the Air R/u Avatar My Pick - The Hurt Locker Best Comedic/Musical Picture - (5...

In trying to come up with a specific quotation in which to begin discussion on The Brothers Bloom, I feel surrounded by a chorus of crickets at every try. re: names, situations, dialogue, I don't really know what to tell you. None of these things bothered me outside of the ending which reeks of a r...

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (Werner Herzog) - 7/10

Somewhere between inspired genre deconstructive and batshit lunacy. Either way, very funny. Cage it hilarious.

Adventureland (Greg Mottola) There is something stronger and better struggling to get out of Adventureland but what we have is still pretty charming. I'm going to give it a pass. The chemistry between Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart (the latter of whom is especially good in this film) is very, ...
