Re: R.I.P. Richard Lewis

I used to get him confused with David Brenner. His shtick was too much for me, but growing up my mom loved him and watched him whenever he could along with Richard Lewis, Garry Shandling and Robert Klein (not Brenner though) until they all became interchangable in my head. Now except for Klein, the...

Re: PGA Award Nominations & Winners

I'm happy for the Nolan fans. It's proof that if you're just a little patient, the ultimate recognition will eventually arrive. (Put aside that for some - Lynch, Altman, etc. - it never happens.)

But I will never get this one.

Re: SAG Thoughts/Winners to be Added

Can we agree the problem with awards shows isn’t the commercials?

Re: Super Bowl LVIII

Well, all those 13-year old girls who only started learning football this season certainly got the best introduction to the game they could have imagined. Don't be so sure. My kid thought the first half was quite boring (which it was, and remained so for some time beyond that) and bailed in the mid...

Re: New category: Best Achievement in Casting

How does one evaluate Best Casting? All other categories are tangible. A performance is a performance, make up is make up, original score is music and so on… what is Best Casting? I assume voters will consider it much like Best Ensemble at the SAGs. But this Oscar goes to the casting director, so t...

New category: Best Achievement in Casting

As if 13 nominations for Oppenheimer weren't enough. https://variety.com/2024/film/awards/oscars-new-best-casting-category-1235902419/ "The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a pleasant surprise Thursday morning by creating a new competitive Oscar ca...

Re: 2023 Grammy Awards

The Swift backlash was going to happen anyway. She's so inescapable that she was due one sooner or later. I mean, we're all a bit weary of her by now, aren't we? My daughter is not a Swiftie, but she's in a play where they sing Taylor Swift songs with comical lyrics. Because of this, I'm getting to ...

Re: "Frauds" and "Snubs"

Gerwig was nominated by the DGA, but not the Academy? Why. Snobbery. The directors branch is the worst bunch of snobs out there. The only reason Triet was nominated was because her film was considered more "artful" by a cliquey bunch of men who didn't want any furor over not nominating a ...

Re: "Frauds" and "Snubs"

I don't want to dismiss what you wrote with a "doth protest too much" reply because you put much work into it. But you're arguing against language conventions, and it sounds a bit peevish. Of course category fraud isn't fraud in the legal sense. But it's a "manner of speaking" an...

Re: New Developments III

I don't think what's going on in Texas represents the start of a civil war, like my feed is freaking out about. That said, someone is going to file a (certainly unsuccessful) lawsuit attempting to disqualify those states' electoral votes, right? Or this will be used as a reason to get Biden off sta...

Re: Oscar Nominations Announced

The silliest, though, remains the claim that it was "old white men" who kept Robbie out of the best actress line-up. This goes totally against the long-held belief that "old white men" vote for the actresses they most want to sleep with in which case Robbie would surely have com...

Re: Oscar Nominations Announced

I knew that when Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were ignored that there would be a backlash. All this is to say that I find the state of moviegoers regrettable, having become a mass that gives its opinion in droves without thinking that much, without understanding contexts, and hypertrophiing the n...
