So sad.
It's almost like the horrors of

Silent Night (John Woo, 2023) 2/10 A major misfire by John Woo. We really did not need yet another vigilante revenge thriller just to see Woo choreograph different ways to attack, kill and die. Over the past decades we have seen enough of such carnage from the likes of Charles Bronson and Sylvester ...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Best Actress
If Stone wins both BAFTA and SAG, she will be the presumptive Oscar winner, which would make a win by either Gladstone or Hüller a bit of a surprise but not a shock as it would if Bening or Mulligan were to win. I am so looking forward to a shock this year. Time we had one....but strictly of the Be...

Re: DGA Nominees & Winner
No one commented because frankly its been very exhausting wading through the endless series of awards. After a while they all began to blur and going down each of the winner or nominee lists became quite a chore.
I've never felt like this before. There are now just too many awards.

COCKTAILS WITH GEORGE AND MARTHA: Movies, Marriage and the Making of ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?’ by Philip Gefter What a document dump! The most delicious parts of “Cocktails With George and Martha,” Philip Gefter’s unapologetically obsessive new book about “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” — ...

Reunion (Jerry Schatzberg, 1989) 8/10 The friendship between two teenagers - the son of a jewish doctor (Christien Anholt) and the aristocratic son of an Ambassador (Samuel West) - in Germany during the rise of the Nazis. The film, in flashback, covers their travels within Germany as they discuss th...

All of Us Strangers (Andrew Haigh, 2023) 9/10 Stunning memory piece - a man's journey of self discovery about life and sexuality through relationships with a lover (Paul Mescal), his father (Jamie Bell) and mother (Claire Foy). Nothing is as what is shown yet every moment rings true for him. Words w...

Re: Category Fraud Alert (2023) -- Correcting Oscar
Really quickly: I'm enjoying how close at least one of these categories is. Very interested in hearing more thoughts on Gladstone. I'm still mulling it over myself. Reza wrote I think Sacha Stone may well be right and Bening might get a surprise win - fifth time lucky like Hayward, MacLaine, Sarand...

Re: Category Fraud Alert (2023) -- Correcting Oscar
With Gladstone out of Best Actress, Robbie would likely have gotten the fifth nod and Lee the sympathy vote for being passed over. It would then be a race between Stone and Hüller, but Sasha Stone would still be writing clickbait articles about how the Academy's old guard would vote for Bening, giv...

Indochine (Régis Wargnier, 1992) 8/10 Interesting to re-watch this film in the very country it is set in. Epic film recreates a time and era long gone and set against the backdrop of the rising Vietnamese nationalist movement. An imperious French rubber plantation owner (Catherine Deneuve) gets caug...

Re: "Frauds" and "Snubs"
The problem with your frustration is that I find conversations about "snub" and "fraud" tend to lead to a lot of good conversations. Maybe not in general but certainly on this board. The word snub is definitely thrown around loosely and it's pretty subjective. Category fraud isn...
