Re: The Post-Festival Landscape

I won't hijack the thread with my thoughts about 2018, but I'd add both director and supporting actor to that pile to be honest. The list seems like a combination of both - especially when you read their comments. I don't think Justin Chang thinks "Showing Up" is a best picture contender. ...

Re: The Post-Festival Landscape

I echo Magilla in that I'm really not expecting much consensus to emerge.

re: Roma vs Green Book

I'm fascinated about how 2018 played out. I remember at the time just being utterly confused about how many of the major races were playing out.

Re: The Post-Festival Landscape

Barely a post, but I spoke with my film critic buddy who has largely the same issues with The Holdovers that I do (he wanted something a little more schematic & less shambling) but he thinks voters are going to go for it and it's a minor threat to win. He reminded me of a major blind spot that ...

Sabin wrote: Wed Nov 15, 2023 5:42 pm He's fine. Keep him. I think people are going to watch the show this year and I think he'd be a good fit for Barbenheimer.
I've never really thought about the host in context of the year's films, but that's an interesting observation.

Re: The Post-Festival Landscape

This is the best time of the year – where almost anything seems possible. Sabin, I actually have the opposite thought – we could have a year that we haven’t had since 1989 where the NBR/NY/LA/Nat. best picture and director goes to four different films. If you asked me to bet, I can see Poor Things, ...

Okri wrote Honestly, I started typing the post before I saw the movie. I'm not predicting Giamatti, but I think the film is probably ensconced in the top five. Oh interesting. We're far out from the precursor awards but watching the film I did find myself thinking that while this is a very showy ro...

Re: The Post-Festival Landscape

I haven't seen The Zone of Interest but I agree with you on Anatomy of a Fall. I would be far more bullish on it if.... y'know, it wasn't a legal drama executed with zest. I'm not the biggest Drive my Car fan but it's a far fuller meal. .... I think Past Lives gets in due to the strength of its box...

Yeah, I think I liked it slightly more than you, but a good snack with some good weed is about right. I'm just glad Fassbender is back on screen, to be honest.

Re: The Post-Festival Landscape

For the sake of argument, I'll agree with your top five, Sabin, though I'm a little curious about The Holdovers. Let's pair up the ten you mention (and I do think that the remaining five will come from those ten) The Cannes Duo: Because the Neon and A24 purchased Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of In...

Re: The Holdovers reviews

Post-Election, I've not really embraced a Payne movie. And I didn't really embrace this one. I found some of the sentimental stuff a little desperate if not outright phony. In general, I found the early school stuff playing like a cynical Dead Poets Society. Some great lines sprinkled throughout, bu...

“Casually chilling” is the exact way I described DeNiro’s performance in my initial review last Wednesday. Lol.
Yeah, I definitely filched that.

Re: Killers of the Flower Moon reviews

There's a little bit of talk going around about how the "birth of the FBI" angle was minimized in the film. Did you find the movie that we ended up with lacking in any way? Or needing something like that? Refresh my memory, how did you feel about Scorsese's last handful of projects and ho...
