Re: Oscar Predictions Thread - TIFF to NBR

Anyhow, fresh acting predictions. I still get a Lions for Lambs vibe from The Post (not to mention the whole thing smacks of an opportunism that will certainly get it votes but probably the kind of 'courtesy' votes that got War Horse a BP nomination despite no one liking it very much) and think it'l...

Re: Oscar Predictions Thread - TIFF to NBR

Oh, I was narrowing my criteria to non-winning supporting actresses whose sole career nomination was also the sole acting nomination for their films. To refresh as a key for the below data: a) Didn't win their category b) Sole career nomination thus far for performer in question c) Sole acting nomi...

Re: Oscar Predictions Thread - TIFF to NBR

Going with that earlier Best Actor thought project, here's what the race could look like if we ignored contenders from box office flops, films with absolutely no viewership, assume that Anderson's film is less successful with the Academy than both Inherent Vice and The Master, assume that Roman J. I...

Re: Oscar Predictions Thread - TIFF to NBR

Unless I'm mistaking your criteria, you seem to have omitted a number of supporting nominees who were their film's sole acting nominees. In fact, these non-winners were the sole nominees, period, from their films: 1992 - Miranda Richardson 1997 - Joan Cusack 1998 - Brenda Blethyn 2003 - Holly Hunte...

Re: Oscar Predictions Thread - TIFF to NBR

Captain Fantastic numbers are all that is needed. I question this. Captain Fantastic was a cheap (certainly cheap-looking) indie, for which $5-6 million is viewed as successful; Stronger was a studio movie, I presume far higher-budgeted, and would need to have grossed at least in $10-20 million ran...

Re: Oscar Predictions Thread - TIFF to NBR

Chappaquidick is being held until next year so Jason Clarke is gone. Stronger is doing Captain Fantastic numbers. Breathe isn’t. This is the third year in a row where Best Actor is a barren field. Captain Fantastic numbers are all that is needed. But if for whatever reason Phantom Thread is pushed ...

Re: Oscar Predictions Thread - TIFF to NBR

I'll put out my current acting category longlists which are ranked by my perception of the likelihood of an Oscar nomination (precursors will obviously be a different story): 01. Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour) 02. Daniel Day-Lewis (Phantom Thread) 03. Timothée Chalamet (Call Me by Your Name) 04. James F...

Re: List of submissions to the 90th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film (coming soon)

One thing to take into account, though it might seem silly now - as the liberal establishment is wrapped up in a McCarthyite frenzy, the very centre-blue Hollywood set may have some kneejerk reactions to the idea of awarding anything coming out of Russia. McCarthyite frenzy? McCarty had pretend lis...

Re: Oscar Predictions Thread - TIFF to NBR

bizarre, what is your reasoning for Kate Winslet almost running the gauntlet of precursors? I thought she was perfectly fine in the trailer, but didn't really see any amazing moments for her. I actually think that Juno Temple looked more impressive. I love your Salma Hayek mentions being a big fan ...

Re: Oscar Predictions Thread - TIFF to NBR

Long post coming up. I'm in the middle of doing a slight update but these are basically my current predictions for all Oscar categories apart from the shorts and for acting categories at the major precursors: OSCARS Best Picture: “Blade Runner 2049” “Call Me by Your Name” “Darkest Hour” “Dunkirk” “G...

Re: List of submissions to the 90th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film (coming soon)

FINAL LIST OF SUBMISSIONS ANNOUNCED: Poor Ghana & the UAE, so excited to submit for the first time, decided to hold off. Bhutan, Macedonia and Montenegro also declined to submit. But here is the record(!) of 92 submitting countries. Another record is that 26 of these films are directed or co-dir...

Re: List of submissions to the 90th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film (coming soon)

I'm predicting the 9-film shortlist to be: France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Palestine, Poland and Switzerland, with a few submissions left to be announced. My nomination predictions are Italy, France, Israel, Hungary and Palestine with France for the win.

Re: List of submissions to the 90th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film (coming soon)

Quite a few more updates. The only regular submitters left to announce are China, Argentina and South Africa, plus Ghana, Honduras and the UAE who have said they will submit for the first time this year. Remains to be seen whether the following intermittent submitters will send something this year: ...
