Re: Kicking Off the Fall Season

Some major players have been reviewed since Venice and Telluride kicked off: DOWNSIZING - Todd McCarthy, pretty much a bellwether of the 'average academy voter's tastes, loved this. However there are some divisive reactions, especially regarding its second half. MVP notices across the board have gon...

Re: Kicking Off the Fall Season

Yeah, I never took Mudbound seriously after the Netflix pickup, though I thought Mitchell & Blige could show up at SAG or BFCA. This will kill the former's chances for that.

Re: List of submissions to the 90th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film (coming soon)

Sorry to hear about what you're going through, Precious. Hope you find some peace and wellness soon :(

Have updated the post with Ukraine's submission.

Re: List of submissions to the 90th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film (coming soon)

Yeah, what Precious said - topical, but it was received poorly at Cannes, Kruger's prize came out of one of the least competitive fields in recent memory and even then was a bit of a surprise (for me at least). That being said, quality counts for less in this category than any other so I'm prepared ...

Re: List of submissions to the 90th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film (coming soon)

Here is the final list of submissions: Afghanistan - "A Letter to the President" (Roya Sadat) - A female government official is imprisoned when she defends a woman from punishment by village lords, and writes the president for help. Surprising choice over another female filmmaker from the ...

Re: List of submissions to the 90th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film (coming soon)

These are starting to roll out. 10 countries have released their submissions so far, with nothing really standing out except for The Square as Sweden's submission (probably a likely winner) and Racer and the Jailbird as Belgium's. Germany has picked In the Fade, which honestly I think will be a non-...

Re: Kicking Off the Fall Season

Judging from that trailer (and the source material) he ticks all the boxes for a Supporting gong-winning character and performance, and he has stiff competition in Lead from actors with better campaign narratives.

Re: Kicking Off the Fall Season

The Last Flag Flying trailer has dropped, and it looks like an easy bet in the main categories. Hasn't really cleared up the category confusion - trailer presents Carell and Cranston as more or less co-leads with Fishburne as sidekick, though Cranston is second-billed to Carell (though - alphabetic ...

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

Which, actually, could either help or hurt Williams' chances. I'm confident in Get Out nominations in Best Picture and Screenplay, though. I actually think a re-release would be a very smart idea as far as campaigns go.

Re: Kicking Off the Fall Season

I agree with the idea that Original Screenplay is stacked this year - I'd say the following 17 contenders all stand a good shot at a nominaton at this point: Get Out, Downsizing, Roman Israel, The Big Sick, The Shape of Water, Detroit, The Florida Project, 3 Billboards, The Papers, Suburbicon, Phant...

Re: Kicking Off the Fall Season

I agree that the Animated Film category seems uncharacteristically empty this year. We could either see a field full of middlingly-reviewed but successful sequels and franchise entries or a selection of little-seen independent and foreign contenders. I think I'd prefer the latter. LBJ premiered at t...

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

Definitely hope so. It's a strong field with a lot of contenders and probably the one that's filling the fastest, but she's a standout and probably the film's best chance at an acting nomination. Catherine Keener is being flouted as a bubble contender elsewhere and she's definitely good, but with on...

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

I finally saw Get Out and it would be fantastic if Daniel Kaluuya and Allison Williams get some traction. Kaluuya's straight-man role provides an uphill battle for him, but Williams could easily benefit from a campaign and I'm surprised I haven't seen her name thrown around as a contender more.

Re: Oscar Predictions & Race Discussion Thread - July to Toronto

Okay, here's a long post, so I'll shrink the text. My updated longlists for the eight major categories before TIFF and Venice start. Rankings are in order of my perceived likelihood of nomination, and winner predictions (nominees in a Best Picture field of 9 or less) are marked as so. Best Picture: ...
