Re: Notable Firsts and Records

For only the fifth time since 1936, at 64 and 60, both winning actresses are older than their male cohorts (54 and 51). It happened before in 1955, 1978, 1989 and 2018. The opposite – both male winners being older the female ones – happened 35 times. (Had Barbra not maneuvered her way into a fishy c...

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2022

Shaul Fridlander, the renowned historion, used the phrase "kitsch and death", referring to a very German way of experiencing the world, when writing about Nazism. And while I honestly believe AQotWf makers are as anti Nazi as they come, that term kept popping in my mind when I watched this...

Re: R.I.P. Chaim Topol

And one more thing - back in 1972, as a 9 year old kid, I became aware of the Oscars for the first time because Topol's nomination was all over the media here. It was really a huge event here, a kind of a big national achievement.

So, Topol is the one to blame.

Re: R.I.P. Chaim Topol

Fiddler on the Roof was such a sure-fire property that someone (in cinema terms) completely unknown could be cast at the head of an exceedingly expensive production and not cause any studio worries. Well - he wasn't completely unknown even in Hollywood. Back in 1965 he won a Golden Globe as a new s...

Re: Evaluating the nominees

Was All Quite on the Western Front a typo or a pun? This is the second time I've seen someone change Quiet to Quite. I wish it was a pun, but no. Just Hebrew speaking person's poor English (I'm fishing). I get the Wizard of Oz reference in 84 years, but it should be "we've been" not "...

Evaluating the nominees

My rating: A- the ultimate best of the year, B- very good, would make a decent, worthy winner, C- a nomination should suffice, D- not necessarily bad, but not award material, F- a failure. Best Picture 1. Tár – B. I am not well-versed when it comes to the world of classical music, but from time to t...

Re: 2022 London Film Critics Circle Awards

Btw, it seems that nowadays Chakiris is older than he used to be - his year of birth is now stated as 1932 and not 1934 anymore, making him, in retrospect, 29 at the time he won and not 27.

Re: Oscar Nominations

And as much as I love Gish (whom I saw in person in 1984!), she was a snob. Rumours about her hinted at prejudice against jews. In the 1920s, Gish had a long-term relationship with critic George Jean Nathan. The two never married, reportedly for reasons related to Nathan’s Jewish background. Maybe ...

Re: Oscar Nominations

Sally Kirkland's nomination was due to her self-promotion. Her nomination came at the expense of some highly regarded performances including those of Maggie Smith in The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne , Lillian Gish in The Whales of August , Faye Dunaway in Barfly , and Joanne Woodward in The Glas...

Re: Oscar Nominations

People are acting like the Riseborough thing is absolutely unprecedented, but wasn't the Javier Bardem/Biutiful campaign kind of similar?: a mostly unsung performance highly touted by big stars (Sean Penn and Julia Roberts prominently, as I recall). Of course, Bardem was better known at the time, s...

Re: Oscar Nominations

Also like de Armas, whatever Uri thinks. Well – my recommendation to skip Blonde had nothing to do with my take on the film nor the performance in its core – it was all about my concern for Magilla’s delicate nerves. Didn’t fool you, did I? No, I wasn’t impressed with either. Natalie Wood was rathe...
