FWIW, Citizenfour is far from Laura Poitras' first film.

Re: Pre-season Thoughts

The DNA profile for this type of role, though, seems to indicate that Imelda Staunton in Pride will be this year's biddy rooting interest.

Ain't that the truth. Daldry only wishes he could direct as well as Metzger, and The Reader would be lucky to be as good as "softcore porn crossed with Nazism" (e.g. Salon Kitty).

Re: Cannes

Closest to a surprise ... Bennett Miller taking director. Well-reviewed mainstream Hollywood films that seem like Oscar hopefuls -- LA Confidential, No Country for Old Men, Mystic River -- have tended to leave Cannes with great critical praise but few major prizes. Meh, take a look at the history o...

Re: Best Original Screenplay 2013

Have seen all five. Consider Her 's screenplay more problematic than its direction and performances, but also think that its conceptual premise is underrated as a tenet of its screenplay. A ludicrously easy vote over the rest of this field. The closest runner up would likely be American Hustle , but...

Re: Best Actress 2013

I do understand the complaint that, with Streep barging through the movie like a gorgon, the entire film starts to feel lopsided, as if what you're watching should almost be retitled Meryl Streep!!!!: The Movie. But on the flip side, her high octane turn was the most commanding thing in sight, and ...
