Re: 2012 Box-Office Predictions
There's actually an actor named Taylor KITSCH? Why not Harold Crap? Louis B. Mayer and Henry WIllson are turning over in their graves.

Re: Midnight in Paris - Woody's latest
Florence is really the Italian city that foreigners (well, at least Americans) really adore. And of course Venice, although that amazing place seems more like a sophisticated theme park than a functioning city. Rome is probably a bit too bustling and noisy and overwhelming for most tourists, other t...

Re: Pantheon of Directors
Frank Borzage Borzage completely slipped my mind, but he's a definite inclusion for my list. But whom to remove? Decisions, decisions, sad decisions. I guess Andre de Toth gets moved to number 13. I could have also included Carl Theodor Dreyer but i relegated him to runner-up status because he made...

Re: 2011 Additons to National Film Registry
Once again, one of the most iconic of all American movies doesn't make the list. Breakfast At Tiffany's is left on the wayside. I don't know who votes on these things but what a confederacy of dunces. One doesn't even have to like Tiffany's but it's impossible to deny it's place in popular culture.

Pantheon of Directors
I got into a discussion with some friends the other day about which directors -- dating from silent films to the present -- are in our own personal pantheon. While the Supporting Actor polls are on hiatus, I thought it would be interesting to see which filmmakers mean the most to the the members of ...

Re: Moneyball reviews
I love baseball -- it's the only sport I really care about. And I had been looking forward to Moneyball -- until I saw that the dreaded Aaron Sorkin co-wrote the screenplay. So I've stayed away from it, but since it's a given that the movie will be up fot at least Best Actor and Screenplay, I'll bit...

Happy holidays to all my UAADB pals, the best film site because of all you guys, infuriating as you can sometimes be.
Loved your anecdote, Todd.

Re: The Official Review Thread of 2011
I just can't imagine giving over two hours of my life to witness somebody's sexual addiction. I mean who cares? I'm praying it receives no Oscar nominations so I don't have to sit through it. And Hunger wasn't good enough for me to want to run out breathlessly to see the new Steve McQueen picture.

Re: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
(Having just paid $16.50 for Tintin) Shit man, is that how expensive it is now to watch a film at cinemas in America? In New York City, multiplexes charge $13.25. 3-D fins have 4 bucks added to them; IMAX I think adds $6.00. Art houses are in the $11.00 range. I never buy food at the movies (just a...

Re: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
I don't know what to make of these reviews at all. On one hand, it seems as if those who like the kid, like the film, those who don't, dont. A friend of mine interviewed the kid and said that his response to many of her questions was simply rolling his eyes. You pull that with the Hollywood Foreign...

Re: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
I do have to say that Scott Rudin and the EL & IC gang are working the mixed reactions very well, and finding some willing accomplices in the press. Note, for instance, how this NY Times article picks up and accepts Daldry's assertion that the film flamed out with the Golden Globes because the H...
Re: Hugo
I think that one major -- maybe even fatal -- miscalculation is that in the first half of the film, Ben Kinglsey's character isn't just a curmudgeon, but he's downright mean, even sadistic. But that's Scorsese for you. And because this Georges Melies is such a graceless, nasty fuck, it's hard to car...
Re: Hugo
Saw it today. It's a well-intentioned but utterly charmless and pedantic film. Scorsese can't do comedy, sentiment or children, and there is no rapport between the two kids (even though Chloë Grace Moretz is a talented actress). Sir Ben sucks the air out of the theatre every time he's on screen. Nei...

Re: 2011 Box-Office Predictions - Where we follow the money
My wife - since childhood, a big Tintin fan - went with a friend to the Tintin 3D midnight sneak last night. They were the only ones in theater. That makes for a blissful moviegoing experience, but it's not a good omen for the film's box office. An international legend, Tintin pretty much remains p...
