Most relevant large surprise for me? Laura Dern - small role that any other decent actress in Hollywood would have done just as well. The world is so interconnected that BAFTA is voting like Hollywood.

Generally expected winners so far...though I missed 1917 for production design and Klaus for animated feature.

I would be disappointed in the Academy if they chose 1917 over Once Upon...Hollywood, Parasite, Irishman, and Marriage Story. The past few cycles they made good choices, except last year when the options were anemic.

1917 was the weird favorite though. A bit dated.

Very odd, indeed. As, in past years, the NSFC tended to track the NYFCC in many categories. I honestly did not find De Niro's Irishman work really good until the last hour. During the first 2.5 hours, I didn't find much depth to his performance. Either that or the CGI blurred his insight. I was surprised, but not shocked, by De Niro's omission. Yes, he ran afoul of the Globes with his 2011...
