I suppose it's time to start making predictions. I checked my records and I have made a grand total of three correct predictions in mid-September. Last year, I was predicting Helen Mirren to win at this time, and in September 2003, I had been predicting Sean Penn and Renée Zellweger to win (althoug...

The same way as everybody else: raise taxes, drop expenditures, depreciate currency.

The comic book is great, but this film won't be. For long I thought this would be unfilmable, but with the right cast and crew, and a proper adaptation, I suppose the comic could be transformed into a decent movie. But with this cast, and Zack Snyder directing, the film will be miserable. It will p...

It's a good point that people may not realise that films like 3:10 to Yuma or House of Wax are remakes. If audiences are only vaguely familiar with the original, they may well get the impression that the original is just feeder material, i.e. not worth checking out. In principle, I have nothing aga...

I don't fully agree with that. If a person sees a lousy remake, he has to rationalize that the original is better, or otherwise the remake would not have been made at all. It doesn't mean he will see the original - or that he will like the original - but I don't think that remakes will substitute f...

Wait, it's September, and they're giving out awards. Are these for best films released in 2006, or best films released between summer 2006 and summer 2007, or what?

How do they decide on "most popular" winners?

I haven't been around much lately, and it must have been an eternity since I last posted anything. Then again, (although the following list is pretty long) I haven't watched very many films in the last six months, so I haven't had much of a reason to visit this board. Maybe my interest in films is ...

Here’s my final predictions... I have a feeling I won’t do very well this year. Picture - The Departed (Little Miss Sunshine) Director - Martin Scorsese, The Departed (Alejandro González Iñárritu) Actor - Forest Whitaker, The Last King of Scotland (Peter O’Toole) Actress - Helen Mirren, The Queen (...

(This may have been pointed out earlier on some other thread, but) If I’m not mistaken, if Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson win, it will be the first time that a film has won two acting awards without nominations for best picture or director. (By my count) Two films, Hud and The Miracle Worker have...

The Queen, although I haven’t seen Letters either (I don’t think it would make any difference). Of the four other films, The Queen is easily the best, if you ask me. I could never have imagined that I would one day be supporting a film by Stephen Frears for a Best Picture Oscar.

My complaint is that you’re very visibly reporting American casualties, and much less of the estimated Iraqi dead. It reminds of the phrase (I don’t remember who said it) that if you ask an American how many people died in the Vietnam War, the reply is likely to be 40,000. The real victims of this ...

3½ Stars: 13. Volver (Pedro Almodovar) Yayy, another person who liked Volver! I think I'm the only one on this board who thought it was the best film of the year though. I'm still pissed that the Academy didn't nominate it for anything other than Actress. The Foreign Film omission is especially puz...

This may be a dumb question, but why isn’t Pelosi running? Given her current position, wouldn’t she be a natural contender? I haven’t even heard anyone consider her.

(btw, Greg, I like your signature - I have sometimes felt the same way)
