That tie in ensemble is a bit odd. It's like platooning Albert Pujols and Monica Seles. Random thought about Streep's selection: the Boston critics have been known to go for local favorites, like Mystic River. And Julia Child's PBS show was a WGBH/Boston production. If things continue this way, we ...

I had the precisely same thought.

For what it's worth, the NY Daily News gives it only 3 stars (out of 5), basically saying dazzling spectacle, silly dialogue. Of course, Cameron got away with that once before.

I saw Blind Side yesterday much the way Damien saw Paul Blart -- because it fit an opening in my schedule -- and my reaction was remarkably like BJ's...not just in thinking it a forgettable movie, but in how it made me realize my own movie-going is so different from so many others. The movie's tota...

I don't have any strong instincts about the LA Critics -- being announced in two installments tomorrow -- but tradition dictates a stab at the winners and runners-up: Film: Up in the Air (The Hurt Locker) Actor: Jeff Bridges (Colin Firth) Actress: Meryl Streep (Carey Mulligan) Sup. Actor: Christoph...

I agree with most of the "others" that could have rated a shot -- esp. Pfeiffer and Sarandon. As Damien notes, Griffith had been a cult favorite in Body Double and Something Wild, and Working Girl was her coming out party for the mainstream. Her work feels a bit like the domesticated vers...

The folks over at Awards Daily have jumped quickly to Avatar is The New Clear Front-Runner -- invoking Titanic's trajectory. A few thoughts: Clearly, this will be a best picture nominee, given the enthusiasm level and the original nature of the material (original as in "not based on specific o...

Yeah, what a surprise no performers are singled out. Cameron's usually such a character-driven director. He makes good spectacles -- certainly far superior to the Bay's of the world. But, good god, this sounds like another tech marvel with maybe 1% human content. If it's the likely huge success, it...

But I really don't see who else the fifth nominee could be aside from Mirren. If, as referenced in the other thread, Julia isn't even eligible (and I'm still iffy on that one), then yes, there is really very little to choose from for that fifth slot. http://thefilmexperience.net/Awards/2009/actress...

You guys astonish me. You seriously think Bullock is more likely to win best actress than Streep? Bullock is personally popular but not viewed as anything like a heavyweight; Streep has the adulation of her peers, almost more this decade than even prior. I think voters have been looking for a way t...

The question would be, if not Mirren, who? The best actress category is already stretching to include Sandra Bullock, thanks to a shortage of qualified candidates. Lovely Bones is mostly getting slapped, hurting Ronan. It's not there's nobody outstanding; it's that there's vrtually NOBODY. It'd be ...

Maybe this will put a halt to all this "Streep is winning for 'Julie & Julia'" nonsense? I don't understand this quote either, Sonic. Based on this review, and the trailer, I think the chances of It's Complicated being a box-office success are strong -- which means that, over the last...

Zahveed, is there any reason why you're ignoring this year's preeminent Oscar-pseduo-juggernaut? I hope you're talking about The Blind Side. If that film gets an best pic nod, 9 should win for best adapted screenplay and Megan Fox should be nominated for best actress and best supporting actress. I'...

Don't leave out Gods and Monsters. The music combined with Fraser's walk in the rain made for one of the most haunting endings of any movie I've ever seen.
