Re: First 2014 Predicitons

One question that I do think is worth asking is what should we make of Guardians of the Galaxy at this point? It is (currently) the highest grossing film of 2014 and seems to hearken back to the early days of blockbuster cinema more than any film in recent memory. If this were the mid-70s to early 8...

Re: First 2014 Predicitons

Will The Gambler be eligible this year? The trailer I just saw says it comes out in 2015.

Re: First 2014 Predicitons

Do we think Whiplash is going to be considered an Original or Adapted script? The marketing is making no secret of the fact that a short version preceded the feature version -- which led to Adapted classifications for Sling Blade and District 9 -- although I believe the feature script was written f...

Re: First 2014 Predicitons

What makes me concerned (and should you as well) about Interstellar is that they aren't screening it very early prior to release for critics. I've heard the screenings are being scheduled week-of release, which is a practice usually reserved for films studios thinks will be poorly received by criti...

Re: First 2014 Predicitons

On a different note, it's worth pointing out that if The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies can manage to receive 4 nominations, Peter Jackson's Middle-earth franchise will have ended with 40 total Academy Award nominations. The last 2 films each got 3, so it's not completely out of the realm of ...

Re: First 2014 Predicitons

I have to start getting ready for work in a minute, but one thing I'd like to bring up re: Christopher Nolan is that this is the sort of ambitious film project that has been known to net filmmakers a Best Director nomination (Stanley Kubrick for 2001: A Space Odyssey , Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity ). ...

Richard Linklater's "Boyhood"

The trailer was dropped today and it looks pretty great. It has already screened at some festivals and has received rapturous praise across-the-board, with some calling it a strong contender to win Best Picture at next year's Oscars. I, for one, got goosebumps watching the trailer. You can watch the...

Re: Oscar Predictions Contest!

Final In Memoriam - Harold Ramis (I suspect they filmed the segment with Philip Seymour Hoffman at the end but rather than sandwich Ramis in somewhere they added him at the end - subject to change if someone major dies within the next couple of days) I can almost guarantee that Ramis won't be inclu...

Re: RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman

Very tragic and sad. I remember a few years ago when Heath Ledger died, someone on here (don't remember who) made a disparaging remark about Philip Seymour Hoffman beating Ledger for the Best Actor Oscar for his role in Capote and how Ledger's death made him even more disgusted about Hoffman winning...

Re: Complete List of Nominations

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Jonah Hill listed in the annual "Who'll Be Back" thread as an "obvious no"? I think his nomination for The Wolf of Wall Street goes to show that you can never predict with 100% certainty the trajectory that any given actor's career will take.

Re: Complete List of Nominations

"Alone Yet Not Alone" is a worship song from a Christian movie. It's so obscure that it has no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the person who wrote the song, Bruce Broughton, is a previous Oscar nominee for Best Original Score for Silverado . Here's the song. The clip begins with the...
