You miss the entire point. It's NOT that he's a tenor. That's not the problem. Though, the tenor thing is wrong for the part, IMO. The problem is that his singing does not reflect 16 years of pent-up rage. It does not convey 16 years of age and wisdom. The same can be said for Mrs. Lovett. Alan Ric...

So, basically, you're saying that no one but Johnny Depp could have done well as Sweeney Todd singing baritone. That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I did not say that. Personally, I would've casted Hugh Jackman as Todd since he's a marquee name who's proven to be a more than capable singer. W...

And me placing all organized religions on the same par as cults is beneath contempt? You're kidding me, right? As Steph hinted at, more people have been killed in the name of religion than have sacrificed their lives in the name of religion. Indeed, organized religion has caused more death, destruc...

Anonymous, your response FilmFan's perfectly reasoned dissection of the final scene may very well prove you missed a good deal. Sweeney isn't a product of just those around him. He allowed himself to seek vengeance. It's part of what the play's about. And if you hadn't known who Benjamin Barker's w...

In fact, Sondheim has said he disliked West Side Story . Yes. What I said: he really must need the money. I cannot believe that he would not care about musicals in general or West Side Story in particular. I have *never* seen this mentioned by anyone least of all Sondheim. Why would you bite the ha...

I think the problems with the way Burton ends the film is multi-tiered. I liked the violent aspect of the scenes, and the youth of Tobias certainly made it a more horrifying killing than it is in many productions. Still, the key problem is that Burton doesn't set up the ending enough. The character...
