Re: The Official Review Thread of 2023

The Boy and the Heron (2023) - 7/10 - While I liked Miyazaki's latest film, it was also a slight disappointment. I liked it, but not as much as I expected, though perhaps expectations are part of the problem. I thought the pace was too slow and the story seemed to lack a bit of the spark that most ...

Van Gogh (1991) - 8.5/10 - The film details the last couple of months in the life of Vincent van Gogh. In 1890, he comes under the care of Dr. Gachet and spends quite a bit of time with his family. Re: The Official Review Thread of 2023

I found The Burial a decent time killer and very much liked Nyad and the 4-part miniseries, All the Light We Cannot See which takes place in a French town awaiting the arrival of the Americans at the end of the Nazi occupation for which Hugh Laurie is likely to get his 11th Emmy nomination for play...

Our Century (1983) - 9/10 - A large part of this film is devoted to the space program with shots of cosmonauts in training (centrifuges, etc.), in flight, in space, and so on. Re: R.I.P. Suzanne Sommers

I've never seen Step by Step either (Gen X'er here), but I fondly remember Somers from Three's Company which I watched regularly from the beginning and continued watching after she left. I do remember her being in the Thighmaster ads as well. It's sad, but at least her family was gathered there when...

Re: R.I.P. Michael Gambon

Which makes him a bit like Alec Guinness: an actor with a long list of notable credits, somehow remembered most for a lark of a role in a movie that made a ton of money. Thank God for being of a certain age where one thinks of Sir Alec strictly in terms of his associations with David Lean & the...

I guess it's been a few weeks since I last posted here. Shiva (2008) - 5/10 - A (very) large extended family gathers during the Gulf War after one of the brothers in the family dies. Re: Barbie reviews

I went to see Barbie yesterday and enjoyed, though not as much as expected. Perhaps that was due to too high expectations based on the hype train and previews. Some of the humor felt a bit flat, but most of it landed.
