Re: R.I.P. Sinead O'Connor

Her song “You made me the thief of your heart” composed by Bono and Gavin Friday for 1993’s In the Name of the Father is a great song that was overlooked by the Oscars (but not by the Globes btw). Also worthy of note, her rendition of Lullaby for Cain, from The Talented Mr. Ripley, written by Yared...

Re: R.I.P. Sinead O'Connor

Anyone who wants a crash course in what "cancel culture", as defined in modern terms, truly looks like would do well to study the career of Sinead after the SNL hysteria. It was a heinous dogpile that would have destroyed even the strongest of people. Although she never backed down or cha...

Re: 2023 Emmy Awards

I looked up the answer to my own question and indeed, Succession’s 14 acting nominations is the most ever in a single year. The previous record holder for a drama series was The West Wing with 12, and the most by any type of show was 13 for Roots, the one series I was wondering about when I asked t...

Re: Notable Firsts and Records

The Daniels becomes the third team to win Best Director following the Coen Brothers and Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins. And every time this has happened, each director ends up with two oscars of his own. On top of winning for Best Director, they won each an aditional award: - Jerome Robbins won als...

Re: In Memoriam

Kind of shocked Tom Sizemore got left out, specially considering how prominent in media and recent his passing was.

First film to win 7 or more Oscars since Gravity in 2013, first Best Picture winner to take more than 4 Oscars since The Artist in 2011, first Best Picture winner to take more than 5 Oscars since The Hurt Locker in 2009, and first to win more than 6 since Slumdog Millionaire in 2008. And, obviously...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Film

Here is a comment that I have had pending for days but had not found the time to write here: since 2005, I feel that the Academy does not like to be told what to do. Many times we end up seeing results that are reactionary to the narrative imposed by precursors. Wasn't it unlikely that Crash, SAG an...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Leading Actor

I'm not in the best position to comment on these races, as this year has found me with one of my worst tracks in seen nominated films. I haven't seen TBoI or The Whale yet, but having seen Elvis I can only hope someone other than Butler wins this award. It still amazes me that he is remains so stron...

Re: Oscar Nominations

I'm glad that the Oscar nominations closed before the BAFTA nominations were announced just so the prognosticators can't claim that BAFTA influenced the voting on All Quiet on the Western Front. It is a thing, coming in a tie for second place with Banshees at 9 nominations each, just two below EEAA...

Re: Golden Globe Awards

Is that his actual voice or was he trying to do his acceptance speech as Elvis? I think it's genuine. I read somewhere that the vocal training lasted more than two years and that somehow he has not managed to leave behind the accent and voice intonation. In fact, you can easily find videos comparin...
