I think Kung Fu Panda is a near lock for a nod. It's actually quite a solidly acclaimed film and had a great run at the box office, whereas Bashir has some serious detractors, in terms of both actual animation and storytelling. Additionally, I think The Tales of Despereaux is just the film that cou...

I dunno - you mean leaving it up to the voters to decide on their own is a bad idea?

Looks like my memory of Doubt is cloudy, if so many think otherwise re: Hoffman in support. Oh well. I'm rooting against the film anyway.

I was gonna replace Hepburn or Neal, but Hepburn's performance is probably the only time she actually deserved the win, so left her alone. Ignoring the fact that The Battle of Algiers was on no one's radar at the time, I think the Criterion release pretty much conclusively proves that it's a master...

That's a weird thought - but of all her leading nominations, only one has come from a film with a corresponding lead actor nod, if my memory is working (Jack Nicholson for Ironweed ). On the other hand, all her supporting work has been nominated alongside other supporting performers from the same f...

I dunno, I could see it, though my memory of the play is a bit hazy. I'd be more offended if they demoted Sheen in Frost/Nixon to supporting, actually.

And, in the same theme, she's actually criticized magazines that airbrushed out her curves in the past.

Group One: I'll replace Patricia Neal's performance in The Subject was Roses with Tuesday Weld's intriguing work in Pretty Poision

Group Two: I'll replace Funny Girl with The Battle of Algiers in Best Film Editing

Group Three: I'll replace Star in Best Sound with The Battle of Algiers

Yes, I'd like to echo that. Mainly because my knowledge of American electoral politics is pretty minimal, especially from an historic perspective, so it was great to read, and also (I might add) a great soothsayer to the paranoia in me.

I'm eight episodes into the first season, and while there's definitely substance and style, it doesn't quite have that spark to put it into the upper echelon of my favourite shows. That said, it's not like substance and style are every day occurrences on television.

Happy-Go-Lucky, directed by Mike Leigh

Terrific comedy, despite a couple minor missteps in the second half. Hawkins' as good as advertised.

8/10

Pick One: Rescuing Anna Magnani, unfortunately at the expense of Susan Hayward. They're both remarkable, though. Pick Two: Rebel Without a Cause for Motion Picture Story Have I got this right? Irving Shulman and Nicholas Ray wrote the treatment, the screenplay being written by Stewart Stearn, so it...

Hmmm..... A chance to award my favourite director of all time for a film that probably wouldn't make my personal top ten? Lets find out. The Georges are out. No passes means no Roy Hill (though, to be fair, a dozen passes remaining would still mean no Roy Hill) and while American Graffiti is Lucas'...
