I don't come here often enough these days - didn't realize there were so many Premier League fans here. Well, more than two anyway.
(I follow Arsenal.)

Re: Gone Girl reviews
SPOILERS!!! 5. Americans would do anything for a child. As soon as the Ben Affleck character knows that he will become a father, suddenly he decides to stay with his monster-wife, despite everything that she has done to him and to others. I don't have good answers or refutations of your other questi...

Re: Best Actor Shouldabeens
Yes, it was a flop in Italy when it first came out, and I've never had a chance to see it on tv. (Rossellini's later movies, of course, were made directly for tv and have been shown often on that medium since). Still, The Machine That Kills Bad People (love the English title!) is at least famous - ...

Is that really the rarest Rossellini? I've seen it too.

Former AMPAS president Tom Sherak died recently at the age of 68.

I'm sad to hear this, because a close friend of mine and my wife's worked for Sherak for several years, and liked him.

Re: Inside Llewyn Davis reviews
I thought this was a very, very good movie, probably one of the Coens' best. It doesn't really have anything substantive to do with folk music, or rather nothing substantive to do with the "authentic" recreation of the early '60s Greenwich Village folk scene. People criticizing the movie f...

Re: Our Top 10 Lists of 2013
Berberian Sound Studio may seem like a cheat, but a good 70% of the film is in Italian. Never heard of this one before, but it certainly sounds interesting. It is quite good. Kind of minor (intentionally so), but inventive. A lot of the dialogue is in Italian, though much of the film's point is tha...

Self-promotion is definitely a strong point for both of them, that's true!
I used to read the Fablog on a kind of regular basis. And he's all over my friends' FB threads (though I've never friended him).

Re: Armond White's 2013 Better Than List
Are Armond White and that psychotic drunk David Ehrenstein the same person? They sure seem like it. Ehrenstein, though a gadfly and contrarian, is more intelligent and also politically on the left. He also has a much broader understanding of cinema than White. Armond White, after the 9/11 terrorism...

2. The Great Beauty (Paolo Sorrentino) I love what you wrote about this one. You gave the move what it deserved. I actually love what you wrote about the other movies, too - amd now I am really curious to see them. And to be honest I kind of loved what you wrote about the only one which - except fo...

Re: The Wolf of Wall Street reviews
I found the movie really entertaining, but in a particular way that it can be entertaining to see train wrecks (literal, figurative) or trashy reality television. I say this kind of neutrally, not as a defense of The Wolf of Wall Street , but also not as a knock on the kinds of low pleasures these f...

Re: Her reviews
Part of the (very limited) genius of this movie is how simply Spike Jonze just tweaked very, very, very conventional rom-com or full-on romance movie with a high concept twist. Even if you hate the film or think it's shallow, it's hard to deny that basic flourish of a premise. It's bold and yet obvi...
