First of all, I'd love to see Scorsese have an Oscar as much as anybody. I have not seen Dreamgirls, so I don't know whether or not I will prefer Condon this year. That said, Condon already has an Oscar and Scorsese doesn't, so I know I'll be rooting for Scorsese at heart even if I think Condon (or...

There are few Oscar wins that would make me happier than seeing Scorsese FINALLY win one . . . but after making similar statements in 2002 and 2004, I'm not holding my breath until he wins both the Globe and the DGA. And, as 2002 & 2004, this will likely be another year when I root for Scorsese...

Mainly the back-home scenes. I thought the film had about one idea -- the real heroes died in the war -- and kept replaying that ad nauseum. It's the Haggis touch. Remember his favorite Brecht quote about the hammer?!

The film is slow. Soldiers reflect on their fate perhaps too many times. Points are made and then made again. But this may be part of Eastwood's strategy: War is slow and repetitive and can drive people to real insanity. Filmmakers usually ignore this in war movies. "Flags" and now "...

Funny, I have L.A. Confidential from Netflix and am about to pop it in right now! The '97 Oscars will always have a special place in my heart because it was my first. At the time, I had only seen Titanic, and was thrilled to watch it sweep. I would not see L.A. Confidential (or most of the other no...

Ugh. One more category Little Miss Nothing will hog on Oscar morning. My only hope is that the emergence of Letters From Iwo Jima as a legitimate Best Picture contender (of course it was always a possibility, but the NBR prize obviously vaulted its chances up a couple notches) will limit Little Mis...

Also, the Animated prize to Cars confirms my suspicions that Happy Feet does not have that Oscar sewn up, and that this will be a real race.

Hmm. It actually seems easier to predict the top three rather than top five. Aren't the likeliest candidates Cars, Happy Feet, and Monster House?

Damien, how would you say it compares to the film of Chicago (which I really liked)? Is it even better with Condon in the director's chair this time around?

Just saw The Lives of Others. It's quite a good picture, combining political drama with moving character study with plenty of wit and suspense. And, not to reduce the film to its Oscar prospects, which I always hate doing to films that clearly don't have their sights set on awards, I could see the ...

I'll chime in and say that, though I didn't care for Happy Feet, it's not exactly the animated equivalent of Ace Ventura and Dumb and Dumber -- its great visual beauty and overall kind-heartedness places it miles above puerile dreck like those films. I almost want to like it now, given that Medved ...
