Which they didn't do for International or Documentary, just to be confusing.Mister Tee wrote: ↑Wed Dec 06, 2023 3:03 pm Oh, and: just when we all came around to the idea NBR had a best film plus 10 more, they cut it back to winner + 9.

RIP Shiela Smith
https://www.playbill.com/article/actor-sheila-smith-dies-at-90 This tidbit from the obituary stood out for me. "In a particularly memorable chain of events, Follies director Hal Prince asked her to simultaneously stand by for Jane Russell as Joanne in Company during the run of Follies. One even...

Re: 2023 Michigan Film Critics Guild Awards
A different type of category fraud: Sandra Huller for the breakthrough award. Even if the award is meant to include veteran artists breaking through to American consciousness, didn’t she do that big-time with Toni Erdmann about 7 years ago? Honestly, she was my personal best actress winner in 2006 ...

Re: National Board of Review predictions
I feel like predicting The Iron Claw for best picture here just for shits and giggles. Either that or American Fiction.

Re: Saltburn reviews
I cannot wait to discuss that third act. I'm not sure if that was chutzpah or just glib indulgence (leaning towards the former right now). I want to watch it again to see if it truly holds together. Other thoughts Linus Sandrgren does a terrific job lensing the whole thing. The casting is phenomenal...

Re: May December reviews
I am so curious what people will think of May December. I hadn't read any reviews so I was unaware that the plot is a take on the Mary Kay Latourneau case (and if I'm being honest, I wasn't entirely convinced that I had the correct name and a read on wikipedia reminded me just how little I recalled/...

Re: The Post-Festival Landscape
I won't hijack the thread with my thoughts about 2018, but I'd add both director and supporting actor to that pile to be honest. The list seems like a combination of both - especially when you read their comments. I don't think Justin Chang thinks "Showing Up" is a best picture contender. ...

I echo Magilla in that I'm really not expecting much consensus to emerge.
re: Roma vs Green Book
I'm fascinated about how 2018 played out. I remember at the time just being utterly confused about how many of the major races were playing out.

Re: The Post-Festival Landscape
Barely a post, but I spoke with my film critic buddy who has largely the same issues with The Holdovers that I do (he wanted something a little more schematic & less shambling) but he thinks voters are going to go for it and it's a minor threat to win. He reminded me of a major blind spot that ...

Re: The Post-Festival Landscape
This is the best time of the year – where almost anything seems possible. Sabin, I actually have the opposite thought – we could have a year that we haven’t had since 1989 where the NBR/NY/LA/Nat. best picture and director goes to four different films. If you asked me to bet, I can see Poor Things, ...

Okri wrote Honestly, I started typing the post before I saw the movie. I'm not predicting Giamatti, but I think the film is probably ensconced in the top five. Oh interesting. We're far out from the precursor awards but watching the film I did find myself thinking that while this is a very showy ro...

I haven't seen The Zone of Interest but I agree with you on Anatomy of a Fall. I would be far more bullish on it if.... y'know, it wasn't a legal drama executed with zest. I'm not the biggest Drive my Car fan but it's a far fuller meal. .... I think Past Lives gets in due to the strength of its box...
