Re: Last Predictions of the Year
Everything I’ve read indicates that it’s standard to feed your cast and crew on a set, even for lower budget projects. The caterer is often listed in the credits. More important is Sabin’s point: this is perhaps a sign of disgruntlement from a cast that were perhaps promised more than what has been ...

Re: All of Us Strangers reviews
I saw All of Us Strangers a week ago, and am still digesting it. I look forward to more people on this board seeing it, as it’s difficult to fully discuss without getting into spoilers, which I won’t do here. I will just say that it is a film that contains incredible beauty in its expressions of los...

Re: Poor Things reviews
I liked it too, though perhaps slightly less than I was hoping to. Somehow this seemed less subversive or edgy than his previous films, though of course it’s still completely wacky. Maybe it’s because the mad scientist thing has been done so many times before. I also thought it meandered a bit in th...

Re: R.I.P. Tom Wilkinson
So, in England, he is remembered more for his BAFTA winning supporting role in The Full Monty than for his BAFTA and Oscar nominated Best Actor performance in In the Bedroom. Interesting. Because one was a monster hit there and the other is likely unknown to most. The Full Monty made a whopping $84...

Re: R.I.P. Tom Smothers
I grew up watching The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. I was too young to understand some of the jokes. All I knew is that I adored Tommy Smothers. He was funny in the most disarming way. As an adult I learned to appreciate how much the two of them pushed boundaries and drove the censors crazy until ...

Re: Maestro reviews
There are some very impressive things about Maestro. The problem for me is that Cooper seemed to be trying so hard in every frame to be impressive that as a viewer I was unable to fully immerse myself in the story or the characters. In fashion dresses are often criticized for being overdesigned. Mae...

Re: Satellite Nominations
A sign of queer mainstreaming? 4 of 6 nominees for Best Actor (Drama) are nominated for playing queer men.

Re: The Color Purple reviews
The Debruge review in Variety is one of those "you weren't there, and you totally misrepresent what happened" things that bug those of us old enough to have experienced something in real time. His first paragraph suggests that the only problem people had with the 1985 film was that Spielb...

Re: Critic's Choice Awards
I'll never understand why the Globes get all the abuse in the world while this ersatz group seems to float above criticism. I think because the Globes are much more in the public consciousness and appear to carry more prestige, deserved or not. I think people who pay attention to film awards, like ...

Re: Let's Talk Best Supporting Actress
Yeah, those are good examples and your point is well-taken. As others have said I think this is true mostly because there are a lot of Academy members who are not avid filmgoers and only watch a limited number of screeners, prioritizing those in the Best Picture race. Critics generally DO watch all ...

Re: Let's Talk Best Supporting Actress
I know that critics awards are not a factor in this nomination-guessing system, but maybe they should be? A case in point might be Melton, who has won multiple critics awards and is getting nominated for bunches of other awards. As of now I’m predicting that May December doesn’t get nominated for Be...

Re: R.I.P. Andre Braugher
Wow, that’s sad. It always pushes a button when somebody close to my age (in this case, a little younger) dies. The early news just says that he died after a brief illness. He had a great actor’s face and voice. Someone who just caught your attention. Nominated for 11 Emmy awards and won 2. Rest in ...

Re: Golden Globe Nominations
This is a pretty respectable list for the Golden Globes. There is no way that the old-fangled GGs would have nominated Alma Pöysti, for example. She would have been replaced by the equivalent of Sandra Bullock in Miss Congeniality.

Re: Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards
Before today I was thinking that Rachel McAdams was getting more critics/awards attention than I had thought she would. With today’s win I think she now has a good chance for an Oscar nomination. Da’Vine Joy Randolph, of course, is steamrolling through everything and seems our sure winner barring an...
