They could have just told the story of the affair and it would have been just as good, in spite of Haley's performance. The dramatic irony, though (as I pointed out in my initial review below) is that here you have these adulterers, internet porn addicts, and manslaughterers daring to cast judgment...

DOWN TO THE BONE (2004) cast: Vera Farmiga, Hugh Dillon, Clint Jordan, Caridad 'La Bruja' De La Luz; dir. Debra Granik This film offers a pretty realistic portrayal of one drug addict's attempt to try and clean up her act for the sake of her family. Vera Farmiga's Los Angeles Film Critics Associati...

I think Frank Norris' McTeague is also ripe for an adaptation. Other than the 1924 silent film, Greed, this story has not made it onto the screen and it's fairly compelling. flipp, isn't this a bit like saying, Other than Citizen Kane, no one's ever covered the Hearst story (or, Other than Long Day...

Just as a comment: the Winters character in the book is much more prominent than the Taylor character. True. Liz Taylor's character (named Sondra in the book, I believe) is much more of a supporting character in Dreiser's novel. This discussion has led me to revisit the possibility of a full-on ada...

A minor award but an award nonetheless. Here's the first of what I see as quite a few critics/festival awards for Gosling thus securing his Academy Award nomination (an awards season trajectory I've been predicting since the beginning of September). Gyllenhaal's win here surprises me. Coupled with ...

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! I'm spending the holidays in NYC with my sister and my parents and it's so cold and blustery out...yikes!

I'm so thankful for everything in my life.

You guys are great. I hope you enjoy this time with your families.

She's worked steadily for years, but I think it's too bad that Sheryl Lee Ralph never became a major presence in film. For my money, she should be an Oscar winner--rather than Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost , it should've been Sheryl Lee Ralph winning Supporting Actress for To Sleep With Anger . Why does...

However, if you look at the word of Jim Ridley in Village Voice, he says "Actors barge in like nosy neighbors borrowing cups of sugar. At the door—who could that soldier be? Why, hello, Elijah Wood!" That sure sounds to me like him thinking it's a pretty ludicrous endeavor. I think writin...

Very sad news. His contribution to American cinema was unique and his impressive oeuvre contains few missteps. Gives a new meaning to Virgina Madsen's character in PHC, doesn't it?

...who's next? Barbara Walters discovers her hidden homophobia? Actually, I think homosexualphobia is the accurate term for what everyone means. Literally, I think homophobia means disliking those who are similar to you. homophobia -- Pronunciation Key - [hoh-muh-foh-bee-uh] (noun) unreasoning fear...

Such poise and unassuming glamour; she really made a wonderful impression on Oprah today and she looked gorgeous to boot. With an Oprah stamp, her buzz just got a little louder. Given how much I loved Gods and Monsters and Kinsey (not a big fan of Chicago), I'm very happy that a Bill Condon film is...

Wow. I've never seen someone so completely unravel right before my very eyes. Mel Gibson, Michael Richards...who's next? Barbara Walters discovers her hidden homophobia?
