Re: Categories One-by-One: Adapted Screenplay
This American Fiction win, which seems inevitable, is not going to age any better than Jojo Rabbit's.

Re: Categories One-by-One: Production Design
This should be Killers of the Flower Moon . Wild how other, less impressive Scorsese films made runs through the tech awards and this one won't win anything below the line. Between Barbie and Poor Things , I think it'll be Poor Things . The Barbie stuff is great but some voters may feel like they've...

The nominees: The Creator Maestro Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part I Oppenheimer The Zone of Interest Movies not nominated for Best Picture have won Sound awards, but A) not since the category merge (which is a small sample, but still), and B) only once since the Best Picture expansion, whe...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Cinematography
But what if ASC follows its British cousins and goes for Poor Things? It's not as if the film isn't stunningly photographed -- I'd put the lighting of the skies in Lisbon up against any image in Oppenheimer . I would argue that is more (or as much) a function of the visual effects than the cinemato...

Re: Art Directors Guild Nominees
I knew very early that the race was going in a different direction, but I hate that Jack Fisk is probably headed for a fourth-place finish for Killers of the Flower Moon . He doesn't work a ton, and is getting up there in age, so this could be his last real shot at winning, and it is incredibly good...

Re: Categories One-by-One: Supporting Actress
Not a lot to talk about it in terms of who will win; I have lots of questions as to why and how Randolph became the only choice. The movie doesn't know what to do with her, and I think that comes through a bit in her performance. I'm happy for her, and won't be mad at her win though. I guess I would...

Re: Category Fraud Alert (2023) -- Correcting Oscar
Gladstone - Lead Foster - Support Gosling - Lead Gladstone could go either way; I think there is an argument for Support, as the film by design centers the criminals (essentially pointing the finger at the predominantly-white audience members), but she has a point-of-view, she is a window to the nat...

Re: R.I.P. Toby Keith
At times it seemed like the right-wing provocateur thing was at least something of an act. He had spent about ten years in kind of a long line of interchangeable guys who sang about the stereotypical country song topics. He had some hits, but never really broke into the big time. His career began le...

Re: R.I.P. Don Murray
I know how billing worked in the 50's, and even how it works today. Category fraud is a term commonly used to describe an acting performance nominated in the wrong category, and Murray's lead performance in a supporting category qualifies under that definition.

Re: R.I.P. Don Murray
His nomination is one of the early category fraud cases that doesn't really get mentioned, probably because a lot of people haven't seen Bus Stop . Also, unfortunately, the movie is not that good, and he is not that good in it. A lot of his movies are pretty obscure, but I do remember liking him (al...

Re: Best Cinematography 1977
I can't vote this year on account of integrity -- I've never seen (or had much desire to see) Islands in the Stream, and I haven't been able to track it down in time. I figure the title tells me why it was nominated. Just watched this. It doesn't change my vote, which would be for Close Encounters ...

Re: Oscar Nominations Announced
-Best Visual Effects is a head-scratcher. I'm leaning towards The Creator but I'm not sure if voters will actually watch any of these films. I'm kind of leaning towards Godzilla Minus One because its success has been a good story, but in the absence of Best Picture nominees, they have often gone wi...
