Re: Oscar Nominations Announced
The silliest, though, remains the claim that it was "old white men" who kept Robbie out of the best actress line-up. This goes totally against the long-held belief that "old white men" vote for the actresses they most want to sleep with in which case Robbie would surely have com...

Re: Oscar Nominations Announced
I knew that when Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie were ignored that there would be a backlash. All this is to say that I find the state of moviegoers regrettable, having become a mass that gives its opinion in droves without thinking that much, without understanding contexts, and hypertrophiing the n...

Re: Oscar Nominations Announced
Sonic Youth wrote but also displaced native people in the making of the film, No indigenous people wrote, shot, or directed the movie. Something to that effect. See, I'm too literal-minded. I thought she meant something like they forced native Americans into homelessness while filming on their trib...

Re: Oscar Nominations Announced
A few female Facebook friends are scorching the earth about the Barbie snubs. Scorsese seems to be their main target. The complaints range from, they always feel they have to reward Scorsese every time he makes a movie, does he really need another Oscar? and I can't remember the last time a woman wa...

Re: Oscar Nominations Announced
I think I should clarify that when I wrote what I did about Ferrara, it hadn’t yet registered in my brain that Margot Robbie wasn’t nominated.
That IS weird.

Re: Oscar Nominations Announced
It looks like America Ferrara is the outrage of the day, here and elsewhere, with people asking "How did she possibly get nominated??" It's no mystery to me. Barbie is a beloved film and Ferrara's character was the only one (along with the daughter) who beared any resemblance to an actual ...

I think that was more a “how could such a thing happen?” statement than a “why did she have to…?”.

Re: New Developments III
Shows how much I know. It was more a wish than a prediction, but I honestly believed he (and Haley) would stick it out through Super Tuesday. The backers must've been pulling out faster than we realised. He was only polling about 5% in the N.H. polls. If Trump wins within that margin, DeS can claim ...

Re: Sijmen's Oscar Experiment
There were a few years where I tried following the formula, but I could never finish it. Its a HUGE commitment. I can only imagine how much time it took to create it. BTW, it looks like the WGA nominations play an important part throughout much of your formula. But they're not going to happen before...

Re: Globes Post-Mortem
I have to confess, I got halfway through the opening monologue and couldn't take any more -- had to fast-forward through the rest. Same, except we shut our set off and kept it off for the rest of the night. I just picked a web page and hit 'refresh' instead (and I fell asleep before it ended anyway...

Re: The Color Purple reviews
LOL. The day after Obama published his list of the year's ten best films, he issued a statement that he had just seen The Color Purple and loved it, saying he was adding it to his list. The internet went wild, saying that five minutes after he published the list, he got a call from Oprah. How could...

Re: May December reviews
My problem with the scene, though, is that it raises the questions "What does Portman do now?", "What has she learned from this?" Since it goes straight into the final scene, the answer to both questions seem to be "Nothing.", unless the movie is saying this has been al...

Re: May December reviews
"What was the point", I'm seeing a lot of people asking. Well, I certainly got at least one of the points, that Hollywood can be nasty, cheap and dehumanizing. And if you're in the mood for some bitchy jostling, it certainly scratched that itch. I doubt it was meant to be the central theme...
