I prefer Gigi to An American in Paris but both are incredibly slight pictures. An American in Paris dwelled way too long on many of the dance numbers, dragging them beyond what was tolerable. They feel just as important to the plot as the montages in The Great Ziegfeld. Though beautiful to look at,...

Since I don't care much for either Gigi or An American in Paris, I don't think I'll be able to sit through another Vincente Minnelli film.

Johnny Guitar wrote:OG, you are aware that those aren't Kubrick's three earliest films, right? Killer's Kiss is available on DVD, and with a little searching I'm sure Fear and Desire is available too.
Yes, I am aware but those films are not on Netflix, so I have no way to really get a hold of them.

Stanley Kubrick has long been one of my favorite directors. I made it my mission to watch every Kubrick film I could get my hands on. I have almost done so. I have his three oldest films (The Killing, Spartacus, and Paths of Glory left to watch). I was also very close to finishing the Quentin Taran...

After I saw Dayton and Faris, and Gonzalez Inarritu pictures, I knew that Frears wasn't gonna be the winner.

This seems like a very interesting project, though I don't know that I want Polanski doing it. Missed Gods and Monsters. But it still doesn't materially alter the situation as two of 40 is still not good odds. And Borat is based on a sketch comedy character. How can a film based on such not be considered sketch comedy? Wayne's World, Blues Brothers and all of the other SNL movies would be co...

PAN'S LABYRINTH SPOILER I was discussing the Fairy Tale vs. Hallucinations issue with some friends, and one who is adamently pro-fairy tale pointed out that the Captain finds the mandrake under the bed, and it wouldn't have been there if it was just Ofelia's imagination. SPOILER Correction. He foun...

Sabin wrote:'Gods and Monsters' won Best Adapted Screenplay against Malick's screenplay for 'The Thin Red Line'.
This aside doesn't quite make sense. Can you put it into context?

rain Bard, a point against your argument. No Oscar voter will be popping Pan's Labyrinth in the VCR to vote for it in the foreign language film category.

Only voters who attend Academy sanctioned screenings are allowed to participate in the voting for the FLF Oscar.

Pan's Spoilers Contained I think there's a different meaning to be derived from the film. First of all, we are given the clue that it's just a child's imagination when, in the scene when they are searching through her room at the end, you see a chalk outline on the wall. I also tend to believe that...

Sicne I believe Babel's taking Best Picture, I think they'll give Marty two Oscars for his film, one in Adapted Screenplay, though be wary that some may not like the screen-to-screen adaptation item. They may feel it unnecessary to have adapted an already quality movie into another movie...

I'll disagree Precious. I know Anonymous has it right. This was discussed the year it won and it was clear that the Academy was honoring it because it couldn't recognize the film in other, heftier categories. In the past 10 to 20 years, the Academy has had a tendency towards recognizing every Best ...
