Re: Pre-Christmas Look at the Top Races

Well I would be disappointed if Peele and Gerwig were overlooked, not gonna lie. I also expect to see them at the DGA. And I truly love McDonagh as a playwright (though I didn't go nuts for 3 Billboards like many). Honestly, I don't know why we should be anything less than disappointed that two peop...

Damon: ""We're in this watershed moment, and it's great, but I think one thing that's not being talked about is there are a whole s---load of guys — the preponderance of men I've worked with — who don't do this kind of thing and whose lives aren't going to be affected,"" Yes. We'...

Re: Web of Sex Scandals

On the other hand, Matt Damon is asking people to differentiate amongst the spectrum of sexual harassment. His publicist must want to staple his mouth shut.

BPM remains my favourite film of the year and I'm rather disappointed it didn't make it.

Re: Golden Globes

re: Get Out/screenplay While I definitely echo that this race is much tighter than internet buzz suggests, I think that Peele's advantage is that original screenplay can sometimes feel like best/most interesting premise - I'd argue Her, Django, and Midnight in Paris all won in part because of that a...

Re: Golden Globes

Oh, I totally forgot about Ferdinand in Animated Feature. I think that’ll get in, and I adjusted my predix. Is Good Time being considered a comedy? What could possibly be the justification for that? ... It's kinda funny? The mid-film plot twist reads comedically? I think it's staggeringly overrated...

Re: The Broadcast Film Critics (Critics Choice) Awards nominations

Mister Tee wrote:First of all, I'm glad we settled on this thread title. They're the Broadcast Critics; calling themselves Critics Choice gives them a distinction they haven't earned.

But we still called them critics and that's also arguable!

a) Yay me!

b) Full disclosure: I didn't know he referred to Three Billboards as the year's best.

Re: LA Winners

I had the same thought Mister Tee did — Best Director has about twice as many totally valid candidates as there are spots, meaning 1) some people are going to be bummed however that category pans out and 2) there’s a serious possibility for Affleck/Bigelow-like shock omissions, simply because, like...

Re: LA Winners

So, Laurie Metcalf repeats her NBR win. I'd honestly thought, if either of the two had a chance to run away with it, it was Janney. But, early days. When we speak about the echo chamber, we often just limit it to buzz/hype surrounding the Oscar season. But with every prize having a show that appear...

Re: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri reviews

I really liked it but not as strongly as everyone seems to here. Strong performances across the board and McDonaugh's usual facility with plotting and dialogue are fully on display so it'll likely end as one of the year's best regardless.

Re: Oscar Predictions Thread - TIFF to NBR

The one thing I’ve been trying to figure out is if critics settle on an advocacy pick of sorts. I’ve started this post so many times I may have actually posted it already, but let’s try again. Tee pointed out a couple things from last Oscar season that intrigued me a) That Portman, despite amazing r...
